A. In one short sentence for each, give your own/personal views on the various philosophical
CONCEPTS OF SELF by the following famous philosophers: (22 points)

1. Socrates- insisted on our rights to think for ourself


2. Plato- soul takes shelter within the body
3. St. Augustine- sees the self as being open to a relationship with God
4. Descartes- examining the sense of self finding its starting point in the use of physical
senses.
5. John Locke- the self is essence in its conscious awareness as thinking, reasoning, and
reflecting one’s identity.
6. David Hume- the self is nothing more than a bundle of such perceptions.
7. Emmanuel Kant- we humans have both an inner and an outer self which unify to give us
consciousness.
8. Sigmund Freud- having a strong sense of self, you can move freely through life.
9. Gilbert Ryle- The self is the way how people behave
10. Paul Churchland- consciousness must be based on a recurrent network
11. Maurice Merleau-Ponty- the physical body is important to be part of what makes up the
subjective self.

B. Select two (2) Philosophical Concepts (of philosophers) that you think very relevant to your own
understanding of SELF. HOW are these relevant to you? (8 points)

-The two philosophical concepts that I think is very relevant to my own understanding the self
are Plato and Socrates because both helps me determine my purpose which cultivate my
abstract senses. Both mind and soul is given by God to me.
