This is the story of those boys and how their courage has brought comfort in the midst of a modern tragedy. It is late summer at Gresham School at Holt in North Norfolk. Founded in the 16th century the school moved here in 1903. It became Britains newest and one of its most dynamic public schools. But for the predecessors of these boys the game ahead would be brutally hard. July 1914, the day of the annual cricket match between Greshams and the Old Boys. Two weeks later war was declared. I knew the MONUMENTAL loss of a member of your own household, you know, the ENORMOUS gap that that caused. I was trying to understand through their adversity my own adversity. Having lost a child myself in her teens, I OBVISIOUSLY had a STRONG sense of young lives cut short and I think, always from the beginning, there was that sense that ... that I was trying to make sense of the senseless in my own life. I wanted to pay tribute to lives that sometimes are forgotten because people are not dying in the fullness of their years. When somebody dies having had a life of achievement and they leave a family and they leave grandchildren and so on, its very easy to write about their lives but its less easy to make sense of lives that are cut SHORT. I cant imagine what it was like going from the Gresham school in 1916 or 1915. Here we were, in the BEAUTIFUL Norfolk country side, in a TINYschool with fewer than 250 boys and then they go to this maelstrom of the war. I absolutely cant imagine what it must have been like.
