Publishing Articles in Composition
Chris M. Anson
It is no news that the last decade has seen a surge of interest in the theory and
teaching of writing. What was once the dull, dogmatic province of grammar
books and uninspired lectures on proper form is today an energetic field draw-
ing from many disciplines involved in the study of language. From the history
of rhetoric to the psychology and pedagogy of composing on computers, writ-
ing has become a major area of intellectual inquiry.
At the same time, however, bibliographic sources in the field of composi-
tion studies remain scattered. Useful and informative articles on all aspects of
composition are being published in the field, particularly at the state and re-
gional levels, without the kind of exposure they deserve. More troubling,
many educators have new and insightful ideas, research, and teaching tech-
niques to share with others, but are not aware of the range of opportunities for
disseminating them.
To help cure these ills, the following list draws together over 70 periodicals
relevant to the study and teaching of composition. The purpose of the list is to
promote fresh professional exchange by calling attention to the many oppor-
tunities for reading and writing in the field.
In all but a few cases, the details about each journal were provided by its
editor(s), who filled out a questionnaire focusing on information useful to po-
tential subscribersor submitters of manuscripts for publication. This informa-
tion has been computerized for easy updating as new journals emerge, as un-
listed ones are discovered, and as existing entries require revision. Shortly
before the list is re-published, a print-out of the entry stored for each journal
will be sent to its editor for emendations.
To conserve space, the entries have been abbreviated. Each parenthetical
number (1)-(7) represents a category of information about the journal. Catego-

ries and abbreviations in the format are explained below. When no informa-
tion was supplied for a given category, the category was omitted from the en-
try.
Many editors advise contributors to know something about their journal,
including its editorial requirements, before sending in material. Conse-
quently, they have discouraged the inclusion of editorial guidelines in the list,
urging contributors to study recent issues of the journal before submitting
manuscripts for consideration. For the cost of a stamp, most editors will send
a copy of their editorial guidelines and policies, as well as information about
the theme or focus, if any, of future issues.
