23. Explain several different factors that influence the ways different people seek to meet their physical needs.
ANSWER: Answers will vary. Sample answer: All people seek to meet their physical needs, but they do so in
different ways. Children experiment with different ways of meeting their needs. The behaviors that
get their needs met are likely to continue. Often, the behaviors children develop depend on the
reactions of the adults around them. For example, a child tells her mother she is hungry. If her
mother responds by giving her something to eat, she is likely to continue telling her when she is
hungry. However, if the mother scolds the child and says, "That's what you get for not cleaning
your plate at dinner," the child may try other behaviors, such as sneaking into the kitchen when her
mother is not looking.
People also learn behaviors by observing how members of their family, community, and subculture
meet their own needs. If most members of a person's family or community consider carrying a gun
essential for protecting oneself, the individual is likely to carry a gun to meet his need for
protection. In a developing country where food is scarce, a person may learn to steal, hide, or hoard
food as a way of meeting his physical needs.
In addition to early experiences and cultural influences, individual factors play a role in determining
behavior. A person may place great value on obtaining the comforts of life and work very hard to
earn them, or he may not care about the things that seem so important to others. All these factors
together influence the behaviors an individual uses to meet his physical needs
.
