Objectives:
● Faculty will work with renowned international experts to design hyflex
and competency-based instruction for their fall courses.
● Faculty will be able to network with professionals from Oman and the
GCC.
● Faculty will have a wonderful opportunity to explore our charming
tourist destination; Dhofar Governorate.
Themes:
A) Hyflex Instructional Design:
Hyflex, short for "hybrid and flexible," is an educational approach that combines
face-to-face and online learning modalities.
B) Competency-Based Learning:
Competency-Based Learning is instructional design that focuses on student
mastery of specific skills or competencies.
Introduction:
In today's rapidly changing educational landscape, the need for flexible and
adaptive instructional designs has become more crucial than ever. The
convergence of various factors, most notably the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, has
disrupted traditional teaching methods while highlighting the importance of
innovative approaches that can accommodate diverse learning environments. Two
instructional design models - HyFlex and Competency-Based Learning - have
proven effective. Educators are using these models to provide personalized,
engaging, and effective learning experiences that meet the evolving needs of
students.
HyFlex courses allow equitable and flexible access to a blend of face-to-face and
online instruction. Competency-Based Learning focuses on student mastery of
specific skills and knowledge. Educational institutions that implement courses using
these two methods are better able to meet the diverse needs of students while
also documenting the acquisition of skills required in the twenty-first century
marketplace. The Summer School for Teaching Faculty will serve as a critical
catalyst for the enhancement of online and blended, competency-based
instruction.
Goals:
During the Summer School, Faculty will:
● work with international HyFlex and Competency-Based Learning experts, to
improve their instructional design skills.
● collaborate with experts and GCC colleagues to build partnerships that may
enrich their international research-based teaching practice.
● develop online and blended competency-based instruction for fall courses.
● explore Oman’s charming tourist destination; Salalah in the Dhofar
Governorate.
