Magotteaux drum ball sorter

JANUARY 2013 MARKUS

2. What is it used for?
The Magotteaux ball sorter is used to classify worn out or used grinding media according to their
diameter. The Magotteaux ball sorter is specially designed for grinding media of a cement tube mill,
balls diameter ranging typically from 17 mm to 60 mm and 60 mm to 90 mm.

There are 8 outlet chutes, dividing the fed grinding media into 6 sorted ranges of size.

The outlet chutes dispense into optional containers of 2 t capacity each or into used drums which
allows for further handling.

3. Why should it be used?

Grinding media inside a ball mill wears over the time. As a result, the initial optimum ball charge
gradation fades away as wear is taking place.

Numerous process studies have shown that an optimum ball charge gradation is crucial to maintain
the production facilities at their best production rate in terms of output and efficiency.
st
It is therefore recommended to sort 1 compartment ball charge once a year and 2nd compartment
ball charge every 2-4 years.

The Magotteaux ball sorter allows achieving the necessary grinding media sorting in order to carry out
the recommended ball charge renewal. It is done in a fast and safe manner, requiring little
manpower.

4. General description
The Magotteaux drum ball sorter consists of a ball hopper, a vibrating feeder with variable feed rate, a
drum sorting system and eight exit chutes.

The ball sorter has a drum made of seven slotted cylinders:

At the entry, one cylinder eliminates particles, scraps, cement, undersized balls … < 55 mm if drum for
the first compartment; < 16 mm if drum for the second compartment grinding media
The six others sort the grinding balls according to size.
Oversized balls do not leave the last cylinder through the slots, but through the cylinder end.

The grinding balls to be sorted are fed at the drum inlet.

An internal screw carries the balls through the drum.

Once a ball is in a cylinder where the slot size is greater than the ball diameter, it falls through one of
the slots into an exit chute below.

There are eight outlet chutes. The first one receives eliminated parts such as cement, scraps, … and
the last one receives oversized balls. The intermediate chutes receive six sorted grinding media
dimensions. Optionally, handling containers as well as automatic dischargers can be supplied to be
positioned below said chutes for ease of handling.

Automatic dischargers allow a continuous operation of the ball sorter while changing a filled container.

The grinding balls are fed into the drum by an electromagnetic vibrating feeder with adjustable feed
rate to optimize the sorting quality.

The speed of rotation can be adjusted by a frequency inverter to optimize the sorting speed and
accuracy according to the ball characteristics.

An inspection platform parallel to the drum enables personnel to clean the cylinder slots.

The exit chutes are covered with non-rebound rubber to dampen the noise and the force of the impact.

Note:

The sorting machine is not designed to remove deformed grinding media.

Highest output rates and sorting quality is achieved when using clean, cement-free balls

9. Why should you buy a Magotteaux ball sorting machine?
9.1. Safety
The machine complies with the latest CE directive for machines. It has been designed and engineered
from the beginning with this feature in mind. Among others, the following safety features are part of the
ball sorter:

• Guardrail all along the machine

• Access to rotating drum is only possible when machine has been put into safe mode
• Easy and safe access for inspection and cleaning of the drum.
• Easy sight into the feeding hopper to check whether it needs to be refilled. No need to climb
on ladders.
• Safety relay

9.2. Efficiency and precision

• Thanks to operating principle (drum) a sharper precision in terms of ball size classes
• Drum of 5.600 mm length (eff. 5.000 mm) → increased transition time. Moreover, the drum
has been designed in such a way that more drum length is available for small grinding media
compared to large grinding media. As a matter of fact, one ton of small grinding media
represents a much higher amount of balls to be sorted than one ton of big grinding media.
• Vibrating feeder with adjustable magnetic motor allowing for high precision on throughput.
This is the basis for good sorting results and cannot be achieved by an unbalanced motor
without VSD
• Variable speed drive of the drum allowing for continuous adjustment of the rotation speed
according to grinding media condition
• Internal screw ensuring continuous flow of the grinding media to be sorted as well as a good
distribution thereof.
• High output rate

9.3. Robustness

• Tested and approved, more than 40 ball sorters sold over the last decade
• Interchangeable drum for first or second chamber grinding media
• All chutes receiving sorted grinding media are equipped with wear protection and noise
reducing coating
• Equipped with two independent heavy duty truck wheels on axle to allow moving inside the
plant, even if the ground is bumpy or with potholes
• Direct drive of the drum avoiding wear. Chain drive is not recommended especially in a dusty
area such as a cement factory.
• Feeding hopper capacity of 10 t allowing for long running periods without the need to refill the
hopper
• The optional automatic discharge devices can very easily be reopened after temporary closing
due to drum or container change
• Fits into a container simplifying transport and shipment
• Limited maintenance requirements
• 6.800 kg
