COORDINATES AND POSITIONS

On a graphs are two “rulers”. The x-axis and the y-axis. The position of points on graphs
are given by combining the x-axis number with the y-axis number called coordinate points. (
X-axis , Y-axis). Example the point C is on the position (8, 5)

What letter is located at each coordinate points?

1. (5,8) ______ 2. (8,7) ______ 3. (7,7) ______
4. (12,2) ______ 5. (12,10) ______ 6. (0,10) ______

Write the coordinate points for each given letter. (x-axis, y-axis)

7. N 8. L 9. J
10. A 11. B 12. E

Plot the following points on the graph. (PLOT MEANS: Draw a dot on the graph and label with
the given letter)

13. S (6, 11) 14. T (3,5) 15. U (9, 12)

(1) State the coordinates of

a) P b) Q c) R d) S

(2) Mark on the graph the following points.

a) T ( 1, 2) b) U (–2, 3) c) V (4, –3) d) (–2 , –4)

Exercise
1) Give the coordinates of the points marked on the given graph.

A B

C D

E F

2) Plot the points of the following letters

P (2, 1) Q(0, 4)

2
Interpreting Graphs of straight lines
Graph 1
State the value of y when
(a) x = 1 (b) x = –3

State the value of x when

(c) y = –4 (d) y = 5

Graph 2
State the value of y when
(a) x = 0 (b) x = –2

State the value of x when

(c) y = 4 (d) y = –6

3
Plotting Straight Line Graph.
Step 1: Complete table of values
Step 2: Plot points using (x ,y) from table
Step 3: Join points to form a line.

Example 1 Plot graph y = x + 3

Step 1:
 Substitute x values into formula y = y
( ) + 3. 10
 Obtain y values. And complete table
9

x 0 1 3 4 7 8
0+3 1+3
y 7

Step 2: Plot from table
Step 3: Join points to make a line 5

Example 2

Plot the graph of y=2 x−3 .

Solution:-
Step 1:
 Substitute x values into formula y = 2 × ( ) – 3.
 Obtain y values. And complete table

x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
2×(–3) – 3 2×(–2) –3

Step 2: Plot from table

Step 3: Join points to make a line

3 Line P is vertical and passes through
Special lines x-axis. The value at the x-axis is 4.
2 The formula of the line is x = 4
