MATHEMATICS GRADE 10
Arithmetic Progressions

Activity 1:-
1) In an arithmetic progression the difference of two consecutive terms is ....................... and it is
named .......................... difference..
2) The ...................... difference is found by subtracting the latter term by ................ term.
3) An arithmetic progression is usually given as a, a+d, ............................, ......................, where a is
the ................................. and d is the ................................
4) i) T1 = a
ii) T2 = a +...............
iii) T3 = a + ..............
iv) T10 = a + ..............
v) T50 = a + ..............
and therefore Tn = ...................................

Exercise 1:-
1) Find the 11th term of following arithmetic progressions.
a. 2, 6, 10, ...
b. 4, 6, 8, ...
c. 80, 77, 74, ...
d. p, 3p, 5p, ...
e. 5x, x, -3x,

2) Find the number of terms in the following series.

a. 5,9,13, .... 121
b. 1, 1.25, 1.5, .... 8
c. -4, -1, 2, ... 89
d. 100, 95, 90, ... -1000
3) The first term of an arithmatic series is 14. Find the commen difference when the fourth term is 32.

4) In an arithmatic series the third term is 30 and the tenth term is 9.Find the common difference
of the series.
5) In an arithmatic series the 20th term is 14 and the 40th term is -6. Find the 5th therm of the series.

6) The first three terms of an arithmatic series are 5x, 20 and 3x. Find x and hence find the first term
and the common difference of the series.

Activity 2:-

1) The sum of first n terms of an arithmetic progression is given by Sn =

2) The alternative formula is Sn = , where l is the last term.

Exercise 2:-
1) Find the sum of folloeing series.
a) First 20 terms of 3,7,11, ....
b) First 15 terms of 2,6, 10, ....
c) First 14 terms of 5,1, -3
d) 34, 29, 24, .... -111
e) (x + 1), (2x + 1), 3(x + 1), ...(21x + 1)

2) Find the number of terms needed to get the sum given in following series.
a) 5 + 8 + 11 + .... = 670
b) 64 + 62 + 60 + ... = 0
3) Find the sum of first 50 odd numbers.

4) Find the sum of multiples of 5 between 10 and 100 both inclusive.

5) Tharushi makes a design using ribbons of different lenths. The length of first ribbon is 15cm,
and the length of next is 18 and the length of next is 21cm so on. She needs 12 strips. Find the
total length of ribbon she needs.

She estimates that 3m of ribbon is sufficient fo the design. Find out weather her extimation is correct.

Activity 3:-

1) Arithmetic means are terms we have to insert between two given ................ so that whole set
becomes an ........................... progression.

2) Fill in the blanks so all numbers are in an arithmetic progression. 12, .........,..........., ..........., 20

3) As such ................, ............... and ............. are three arithmetic means between 12 and ..........

4) Arithmetic means are found using the formula Tn = ............................................

5) If there is only one arithmetic mean it is the ............................ of given two numbers.

6) The arithmetic mean between x and y is ...................................
