by the inclusion of the circular cover on the
transparency sprue-frame, which of course I
would utilise for my conversion. I merely had
to replicate the circular cut-out in the centre of
the upper-fuselage panel and add a housing
beneath in which to mount my antennae. This
was easily done using plastic card to create
the housing, and adding a metal antenna
from the Airwaves detail set #AEC48011. The
Aires engines, as already mentioned, were
works of art in of themselves, and therefore
took some time and patience to assemble.
My reference photographs proved essential
here, as the tropicalised version of the Jumo
211’s had an assortment of pipes and filters
added that were not present in the Aires
set, and which had to be scratch built from
stretched-sprue, metal rod and scraps sourced
from my ‘spares box’. Although it had initially

inaccurately-shaped Aires firewalls, made to

comply with the incorrectly contoured Revell/
Monogram kits. Initially, then I adapted the
leading edges of both wings to accept the
new resin firewalls. Once glued to the wings,
plastic card ‘cheeks’ were then added to the
sides of the circular firewall units to correct
their shape and so match the contours of
the ICM wheel-bay nacelles, which were
constantly dry-fitted for measuring purposes.
The bay interiors also required the addition of
plastic card panelling to blend the resin parts
more neatly into the wings and so create an
environment for the kit undercarriage legs to
slot comfortably into position once the wings
had been assembled. I also felt it necessary at
this stage to add internal strengthening to the
very thin and flexible wings. The assembled
and strengthened wings were cemented to
the completed fuselage, before construction
commenced on the wheel-bay nacelles, The other feature that was missing from been my intention to display both engines,

With all the build and conversion work

U-2 biplane was deployed for reconnaissance
flights and as a light bomber during the
defence of Odessa. Although its slow speed
meant enemy fighters found it hard to catch,
as they overshot, it was vulnerable to anti-

was redeployed as a light night ground attack

built by the end of the war is testament to the
aircraft’s utility.

required parts were removed from the sprues and cleaned up, and this
included separating the resin ejector seat from its casting block with
a razor saw. I could remove all the raised detail from the cockpit parts
that would eventually be replaced by the supplied coloured etch. I
then gave everything a couple of light White primer coats. You should
also note that the cockpit tub contains the front wheel well, and I
found it much easier detailing and finishing this area off now, rather
than waiting until it’s been built into the fuselage. Once the primer
had dried I airbrushed Hataka Dark Sea Grey onto the internal sections
of the cockpit. The set I’m using here is their US Navy and USMC
‘High-Viz’ Set. Once the paint had dried, I sealed everything with a thin
layer of Hataka Gloss. A Dark Grey wash was then used to help pick

and Tamiya extra thin liquid glue run around

well, the rear two were also easier to deal with
before assembling the wings. So, I masked off
the surrounding area around the two wheel
wells and following my own references and
the Eduard instructions painted and detailed
them. Once the paint had dried the top and
bottom wing sections were glued together
and held in place using small clamps. The
wings were then fixed into place and a little
filler was needed, followed by some time
being spent detail back using various scribers
and riveting tools. Apart from a few of the
smaller items, the only thing left to add for
now were the canopies. Here I applied the pre-
cut masks, before I attached the front sections
with some Micro Krystal Klear canopy glue.
With everything suitably masked-off, and any
smaller items attached that I didn’t think I’d
break off through handling, I was finally able
to prime the model in preparation for painting.
Additionally, any areas already painted, like the
wheel wells and engine exhaust were masked
up using Tamiya tape and Maskol. I gave the
model an overall coat of Dark Grey Primer,
and once dry I gave the surface a slight polish
with a clean cloth in preparation for adding
some colour. First up the lower surfaces were
airbrushed with Hataka Insignia white. Once
this had sufficient time to dry, the lower
surfaces were masked-off, before airbrushing
Hataka Light Gull Grey over the top surface.

amount of weathering. The AIM-9 Sidewinders
are from one of Meng-Models new weapons
sets, and are a work of art. The fins are very
thin, and the finished missile looks stunning.
Now I turned my attention to the
weathering. First off, I used UMP’s Dark Dirt
Wash on the airframe, pylons, and tanks, and
any excess was removed with a soft cloth. I
then gave everything a coat of Hataka Matt
in readiness for next stage of weathering.
For this I used the excellent AK Interactive
pigments, and a lesson learned here is that
you don’t need too much, and you only need
the smallest amount on a brush, and they go
a long way. I used Smoke, Burnt Umber, Light
Grey, and Light Dust.
I also used a small amount of Tamiya
Weather Master Oil Stain on the drop tanks.
Once the weathering was done, I applied
another couple of light Matt coats, to seal
the pigments, and once dry I
removed the masking from
the canopy, attached all the
undercarriage and doors,
the weapons and tanks, the
crew ladder, and fitted the
seats. Overall, this is a great
kit, with only one major issue,
mentioned earlier, is having to
cut some the section between
the front and rear cockpits. Other
than that, there was no problem,
and the Hataka Orange Line
paints are excellent, and give a very
smooth, hard finish. MA
