REACTION PAPER
in
THE DARK SIDE OF SELF IMPROVEMENT
BY SUZANNE EDER
(TEDxWILMINGTON)

The short video about the dark side of self improvement is

improving oneself for the sake of being better, rather than
because there is something wrong with it. It is more
effective to be more growth-oriented than goal-oriented. I
really like the idea of wanting to focus more on progress
than on achieving specific goals. If you are solely goal-
oriented, all you can think about is “I’m not there yet; I’m
still not there,” but if you are growth-oriented, you may
feel proud of yourself every day as you make small
progress toward your goal.
Self-improvement actually improves you, as the name
implies. What you wish to grow within yourself will
determine how to go about it. However, one simple yet
potent word separates the negative aspects of self-
improvement from the positive aspects.
The difficulty is that we frequently equate happiness with
other people's ideas and views rather than our own,
despite the fact that self improvement is a potent and
crucial tool for pleasure.
We entrust them with our happiness and sense of purpose
in life while pursuing a dream that isn't really ours.
You will create objectives based on false expectations if
you think you aren't good enough or thin enough in
comparison to other people. Even if you succeed in
achieving those objectives, you won't be much happy in
the end than you are today.
Self improvement is an advancement rather than a
transformation.Instead of completely changing you, it
should highlight the wonderful aspects of who you
already are.
The negative aspect of self-improvement is when you
believe that you are the issue. This is untrue since you
already own all of the resources need to have the life you
desire.

Self-improvement can only help you become
more aware of the resilient person you already are on the
inside. Knowing yourself and why you want to change is
the first step in using self-improvement effectively and
what it drives your desire to get better.
You won't be able to achieve positive outcomes if you bas
e your self-improvement aspirations on other people's
perceptions or your own negative beliefs.
Since those aren't your reasons, if you establish goals
from the incorrect place, you won't succeed in finding
happiness. You already own the solutions, don't let
external voices influence who you are and what you want
to become. Everyone has the capacity to grow. There is no
reason to question that it is innate. Putting your trust in
yourself and, starting today, doing what can be better.

To conclude, the negative aspect of self-improvement is

when you believe that you are the issue, it isn’t true
because, just like Ms. Suzanne Eder tells us that
you already own all of the resources you need,
the life you desire. Self-improvement can only help you
become more aware of the resilient person you already
are on the inside.
