GAVIOLA Undersecretary SUBJECT 2022-23 Nuclear Science and Technology Education Competition for Secondary Students and Teachers DATE : August 25, 2022 ‘The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), through the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), announces the 2022-23 Nuclear Science and Technology Education Competition for Students and Teachers. ‘The competition aims to promote creative thinking for (a) secondary-level students on how they see the role of nuclear science and technology in contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals towards tackling the global plastic pollution problem in line with the IAEA's NUTEC Plastics initiative, and (b) secondary level teachers on how they creatively introduce nuclear science and technology (NST) to non-science students. The competition is designed within the framework of the project RAS0091 Supporting Nuclear Science and Technology Education at the Secondary and Tertiary Level and is open to the Member States. ‘The competition for students involves creating a video presentation where they can work alone cor with a partner. The video presentation shall not be more than 3 minutes long and can be in the form of a documentary, short story, animation, and the like. ‘The secondary teacher's competition involves presenting either a co-curricular or an outreach activity proposal to creatively introduce nuclear science and technology to a non-science student, Similarly, teachers can work alone or in pair in creating the proposal. ‘The deadline for submission in on October 21, 2022. Secondary-level teachers on how they creatively introduce nuclear science and technology (NST) to non-science students. Competition Details Category 1: Secondary students’ competition Details of Participation: 1, Ina video presentation, secondary students will share their testimonials on how they view the role of NST in contributing to the UN SDGs towards tackling the global plastic pollution problem in line with the IAEA’s NUTEC Plastics initiative. 2. Secondary high school students can work alone or with a partner (maximum 2 people) between 17 ~ 19 years old from the Asia and the Pacific region, The participant should be 17 years old as of 1 April 2022. 3. The video submission should be no more than 3 minutes long and can be in the form of adocumentary, short story, animation, and the like, 4, Submissions can be in the students’ local language with English subtitles. However, the live Q&A will be in English. 5. Entries will be judged based on the following ‘© Content (20%) - comprehensive, technically correct, and easy to understand, + Impact (20%) ~ the video should have a powerful effect on the target, audience Relevance (30%) ~ The video must be relevantto the UNSDGs and the thematic area: plastic pollution and the environment. © Creativity and Originality (30%) ~ The video must be original and visually stimulating Category 2: post-secondary students’ competition Details of Participation 1. Post-secondary students will present a 5-page written proposal to a potential partner and/or donor of their choice to attract participation in one of the strategic IAEA initiatives: '* Zoonotic Disease Integrated Action (ZODIAC) ‘© Rays of Hope: Cancer Care for All * NUclear TEChnology for Controlling Plastic Pollution (NUTEC Plastics) For more on resource mobilization, click here. 2. The proposal can cover any of the following: ‘© Financial partnership © Outreach = Synergyefforts = Other 3, Post-secondary students from the Asia and the Pacific region who are currently undergoing post-secondary studies (minimum 2 people) can participate. Itis required that the group comprise different fields of study. For example, a science studentcan partner with a non-science student (i.e. business student). Finally, submissions must be in English. 4. Entries will be judged based on the following: © Content (20%) - comprehensive, technically correct, easy to understand and thorough © Originality (20%) - The proposal must be original, well thought out and creative © Coherence & justification (30%): the proposal is well-defined and the problem or need as well as the proposed solution are clearly stated © Clarity/completeness (30%): the proposal is clearly formulated, states how NST can solve the problem related to one of the IAEA initiatives and covers at least one of the following: financial partnership, outreach or synergy efforts Category 3: Secondary teachers’ competition ‘+ Secondary teachers from the Asia and the Pacific region can work alone or with a partner (maximum 2 people) to present a proposal (eithera co-curricular or an outreach activity) to creatively introduce nuclear science and technology (NST) to, non-science students that will capture their interest. ‘© Submissions can be in the Teachers’ local language with English subtitles. However, the Q&A will bein English. + Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: ‘© Content (20%) - comprehensive, technically correct, and easy to understand, clear and focused purpose ‘0 Impact (20%) ~ the submission should have a powerful message to the students © Relevance (30%) ~ The submission must be relevant to the objective of the competition (to engage students in NST subjects) and the chosen topic © Creativity and Originality (30%) - The submission demonstrates significant creativity in the above criteria. ‘Timeline and Selection Process ‘© 21 October: Deadline to submit submissions (at 11:59 p.m. [CET]) ‘+5 December: The IAEA notifies finalists ‘24 January - 10 February 2023: Finalist submissions are showcased at the 2023 Virtual NST Education Exhibition.
