Introduction
This introduction presents important concepts used in this standard.

Energy conversion systems

As an energy conversion device (ECD) comprises a number of different components and functions, for the
purpose of this Standard, two different systems are considered:

System 1, where

 the calorific value determination device (CVDD) is locally installed and is considered as being fully part of
the ECD, and

 the energy calculator (EC) will have the ability to utilise a signal generated by this locally installed CVDD
for determining energy.

Figure 1 shows the various components of ECD system 1.

Figure 1 — Description of ECD system 1

5
BS EN 12405-2:2012
EN 12405-2:2012 (E)

System 2, where

 the CVDD may not be locally installed and is considered as an external transducer of the system, and

 the calculator will have the ability to accept fixed or periodically updated signals for the calorific value for
determining energy.

Figure 2 shows the various components of ECD system 2.

Figure 2 — Description of ECD system 2

NOTE The various components of the ECD need to be supplied as a matched, ready-for–use, set of devices; this
applies to System 1 and System 2, and mechanically integrated or separated devices (see modular and global
approaches below).

Modular and global approaches

In the modular approach, the ECD is an assembly of separate associated measuring instruments (VCD and
CVDD) and an energy calculator (EC), which are verified separately. Each instrument is verified according to
its testing procedure, using the indication available on the energy calculator or on the associated measuring
instrument itself. In this case, the indication shall correspond to the one which is directly processed in energy
conversion. The verification of calculation consists in verifying the calculation concerning each characteristic
quantity of the gas and/or the calculation for the energy conversion.

The associated measuring instruments are approved for a type or some types of conversion device(s) in order
to ensure the compatibility of the association. If the associated measuring instruments deliver a digital signal,
they may be considered as interchangeable, provided the type examination certificate provides all the
necessary conditions of compatibility with the calculator of the conversion device.

In the global approach, the ECD is tested as a package, performing tests of the following functions: energy
calculation, volume conversion and CV determination.

The testing procedures are given in Clause 9.

1 Scope
This European Standard specifies the requirements and tests for the construction, performance, safety and
conformity of conversion devices used to determine the energy of fuel gases described in the Table 1,
including those of the 1st and 2nd families according to EN 437.

The energy conversion device (ECD) considered in this standard consists of an energy calculator (EC) and is
associated with the following devices and/or functions:

 a volume conversion device (VCD) or a flow computer used as gas meter conversion, either conforming
to EN 12405-1:2005+A2:2010, or to prEN 12405-3, for high accuracy measurements;

 a calorific value determination device (CVDD).

Requirements for type approval tests of the devices, not included in the above-mentioned standards are
described in appropriate annexes specified in Table 6.

For the purpose of this European Standard, the term “volume conversion devices” (VCDs) includes flow
computers (FCs).

A single calculator may undertake the volume conversion functions for different metering lines.

4 Principles of energy determination

Energy determination can be characterised in numerous ways. The most simple way is where the totalised,
unconverted, volume passed by a gas meter is multiplied by a constant value of CV; the most complex is
where the volume passed by a gas meter is converted to base conditions and a live output from a CVDD is
continually inputted into the energy calculator. Shown below is a list of formulae for all combinations of energy
calculator associated with CVDDs and VCDs.

The CV calculation shall be carried out according to ISO 6976. The standard base conditions of temperature,
pressure and humidity (state of saturation) to be used for measurements and calculations carried out on
natural gases, natural-gas substitutes and similar fluids in the gaseous state shall be in accordance to EN ISO
13443.

The calorific value will normally be determined on a volumetric basis by measurements performed by CVDD. It
can be also determined however by reconstruction systems. In all cases, the energy is calculated from the
product of a representative calorific value and a volume at the same base conditions.

The totalised energy Et is calculated after the time interval t by the following formula:

Et = Et-1 + ∆Et (1)

Et-1 is the totalised energy before the time interval, t.

Generally, the determination of the incremented energy, ∆Et, calculated as ∆Et = (HS.Vb)t , can be
characterised following one of five approaches:

a) by summation of unconverted volume:

k
∆Et = K (H S )t ∑ Vm i
i =1
(2)

Tb [P ] Z b
where K= (3)
[T ] Pb [Z ]
K is a constant, representative of the conversion factor to convert sum of volumetric
increments Vmi at metering conditions to volumetric increments at base conditions;.

[T], [P], [Z] are constants, representative of the (varying) parameters T, P and Z;

Tb, Pb, Zb are constants; index “b” means “at base conditions”;

(Hs)t - HS is a constant, representative or the most updated value of the gas CV for the summation
period “t”;

Vmi : volume increments at metering conditions for each “i” from i= 1 to i= k (adequate to each
gas meter impulse).

During the summation time period, “t” the “k” volume increments Vmi are added together.

b) by application of volume summation at metering conditions and “T conversion”:

H  k
∆Et = K'  S 
 T t

where K' = Tb
[P] Z b (5)
Pb [Z ]

T: representative value of the measured temperature over the summation period “t”;

c) by application of volume summation at metering conditions and “PT conversion”:

 P× HS  k
∆Et = K'' 
 T t
 ∑V
i =1
mi (6)

where
Tb Z b
K'' = (7)
Pb [Z ]

P: representative value of measured pressure over the summation period “t”;

Remaining symbols: as above.

d) by application of volume summation at metering conditions and “PTZ conversion”:

 P× HS  k
∆Et = K ′′′  
 T × Z t
∑V
i =1
mi (8)

Tb
where K ′′′ = Zb (9)
Pb

Z: representative value of compressibility factor over the summation period “t”;

Remaining symbols: as above.

e) by application of volume summation at metering conditions and P T Z conversion including

determination of compressibility factor at base conditions Zb for currant gas composition:

 P × H S × Zb  k
∆Et = K'''' 
 T ×Z

6.2 General (including software)

6.2.1 All the constituent elements of an ECD shall be constructed of materials having appropriate quality to
resist the various forms of degradation which may occur under rated operating conditions as specified by the
manufacturer. An ECD shall, in all circumstances, withstand the influence factors and disturbances defined in
8.5 and 8.6.

6.2.2 All the constituent elements of an ECD shall be designed in such a way that it does not degrade the
accuracy of the measurement of the gas meter with which it is associated.

6.2.3 The ECD shall be constructed in such a way that any intervention, liable to influence the accuracy of
measurement, shall cause permanently visible damage to the ECD or its protective seals, or set an alarm
which shall be memorised in the event register. The seals shall be visibly fixed, and easily accessible.

Electronic seals shall comply with the following requirements:

 Access shall only be obtained by using a password or a code that can be updated or by using a specific
device;

 The last intervention, at least, shall be registered in the memory, including date and time of intervention
and a specific element to identify the intervention;

 It shall be possible to have access, at least, to the last intervention.

For VCD, where the given inputs may be dismantled or replaced, all connections and interfaces between the

19
BS EN 12405-2:2012
EN 12405-2:2012 (E)

 over 30 s for other types,

recalculation is not required until the next volume signal is received.

6.2.5 Any interfaces and connections fitted within the ECD allowing the connection of complementary
devices shall not corrupt the metrological behaviour of the ECD.

6.2.6 The interconnections and any interfaces between the calculator and the transducers are integral parts
of the ECD.

For an ECD being composed of an assembly of separate associated devices, these connections should be
protected by separate seals, to avoid breakage of the main metrological seal (or verification mark) in the case
of replacement of a component.

The manufacturer shall specify the length and characteristics of the interconnections and of any interfaces
where these may affect the accuracy of measurement of the ECD.

6.2.7 A data transmission interface of associated devices shall fulfil the following conditions:

8.3.2 Error of energy calculation

Converting in energy results is obtained from the multiplication of the converted volume Vb by the
representative calorific value HS.

The error e on the energy calculation carried out by the calculator is defined by the following formula:

EC − ECT
ec = x 100 (12)
ECT

where

Ec = Vb x HS
ECT = Vb CT x HS CT

The errors on volume conversion factor and calorific value are defined by the following formulae:

C − C CT
eV = x 100 (for type 1; see EN 12405-1:2005+A2:2010 for type 2) (13)
C CT

H S − H SCT
eCV = x 100
H SCT
(14)

The allowed combined error is given by:

28
BS EN 12405-2:2012
EN 12405-2:2012 (E)

|e| = |eV| + |eCV| +|eC| ≤ |MPE| (15)

NOTE The values of MPE for ECD have been fixed, taking into account very low probability of occurrence of the case
when all three errors |eV| , |eCV| and |eC| at the same time reach values of MPEV, MPECV and MPEC adequately.

The specific errors of VCD are described in EN12405-1:2005+A2:2010.

In order to determine the errors on CV, the conventional true value HS CT shall be calculated according to ISO
6976.

The errors shall be calculated either before, during or after the tests and compared to the MPE in reference or
rated operated conditions as described in the appropriate annex.

9.3 Verification of performance requirements

9.3.1 General

For each performance test, typical test conditions are indicated: they correspond to the climatic and
mechanical environment conditions to which measuring systems are usually exposed. Measuring instruments
are divided into two classes according to climatic and mechanical environmental conditions:

 Class I for fixed instruments installed in a building,

 Class O for fixed instruments installed outdoors (field-mounted).

However, the applicant for type approval may indicate specific environmental conditions in the documentation
supplied to the conformity assessment body, based on the intended use of the instrument. In this case, the
conformity assessment body carries out performance tests at severity levels corresponding to these
environmental conditions. If type approval is granted, the data plate shall indicate the corresponding limits of
use.

Manufacturers shall inform potential users of the conditions of use for which the instrument is approved. The
conformity assessment body shall verify that the conditions of use are met.

9.3.2 Test conditions

The instrument shall meet the requirements and severity level specified in appropriate annexes.

The tests shall be performed using reference instruments traceable to national standards. Their uncertainties
shall be determined, including those arising from their use, and shall not exceed one fifth of the maximum
permissible errors.

Measurement results shall include an uncertainty statement which is to be evaluated according to the GUM [4].
The coverage factor of the expanded uncertainties shall be stated explicitly.

9.3.3 Limits of gas composition

If application ranges of parameters like p, T and gas composition (of the gas to be measured) declared by the
ECD manufacturer comply with the limits of compressibility calculation methods specified in EN ISO 12213-2
or EN ISO 12213-3 for the lowest uncertainty, then one of these methods shall be used for calculations of
reference compressibility conventionally true values.

If application ranges of parameters like p, T and gas composition declared by manufacturer fall outside the
limits assigned to lowest uncertainty, then another reliable method (with known uncertainty) can be used. If
such method is not available, a verification shall be performed against laboratory tests based on the gas
density measurements at metering conditions and base conditions.

Conventionally true values of CV shall be calculated according ISO 6976.

9.3.4 Samples of ECD required for testing

If an ECD is composed of separate elements (modular approach) each element shall be tested separately.
For each constituent of the ECD (CVDD, VCD and energy calculator), the specifications regarding test
samples are given in Table 7. The recommended test sequences are given in EN 12405-1:2005+A1:2010 for
VCD or in corresponding annexes (Annex A for EC, Annex B for CVDD, etc.).

For an ECD tested as a package (global approach), the number of samples to be tested shall be as indicated
in Table 7.

Each ECD tested shall satisfy the performance requirements specified in Clause 8.

Annex B
(normative)

Type test of the calorific value determination device (CVDD)

B.1 Scope
This annex specifies the performance tests of the calorific value determination device (CVDD).

B.2 Performances tests

B.2.1 Adjustment range

The aim of an adjustment procedure is to bring the calorific value determining device to within its normal
operating range for its intended use and accuracy. If applicable, the manufacturer shall provide the
appropriate procedure to determine the adjustment range. In particular, adjustment procedures shall be
established taking into account the following factors:

 the number of calibration gases to cover the operational range;

 the adjustment interval (i.e. the interval between adjustments will be a function of the stability and the
repeatability of the measuring instrument);

 the duration of the adjustment test and the number of adjustments.

These calibration gases shall be prepared, checked and certified according to ISO 6141, ISO 6142 and ISO
6143.

For chromatographic devices, the calibration gas should contain components listed in 6.8 with exception of the
neo-pentane which can be used optionally.

The adjustment range shall be limited in order to prevent excessive corrections. The corresponding limits shall
be suitable for the intended use. Outside the range, the CVDD shall no longer operate and shall generate a
warning message.

B.2.2 Data transmission interface test

B.2.2.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that the CVDD conforms to requirements concerning data transmission interfaces
specified in 6.2.7.

B.2.2.2 Reference to documents

See WELMEC guide 7.2 [7].

B.2.2.3 Procedure

The test procedure specified in Annex I shall be applied.

40
BS EN 12405-2:2012
EN 12405-2:2012 (E)

B.2.2.4 Acceptance criteria

The transmission input and output interfaces shall operate as designed.

The values of the parameters transmitted and the values of the same parameters received shall be similar
with precision characteristic for the parameter/data type specified in the transmission protocol (like e.g. long
integer, long real, short real, etc.).

B.2.3 Alarms operation

B.2.3.1 Objective

The objective is to simulate a situation where each of the characteristic quantities of the CVDD in turn goes
outside its specified field of measurement (specified measurement range) and to verify that the alarms operate
in accordance with the relevant specifications of this European Standard.

B.2.3.2 Reference to documents

No reference to European or International Standards can be given at the moment.

B.2.3.3 Procedure

The test consists of reaching the set points (limits of the specified ranges) by increasing then decreasing the
chosen parameter, in order to verify the operation of the alarms and the correct resetting of the calculator back
to its normal operation as soon as the value of the chosen parameter comes back in its declared operating
range.

B.2.3.4 Acceptance criteria

All alarms shall be completely checked: nature, date, hours of the beginning and end of the alarm.

B.2.4 Accuracy tests under reference conditions

B.2.4.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that CVDD conforms to requirements concerning MPE specified in Table 4 in 8.3 of
this standard.

B.2.4.2 Reference to documents

No reference available at the moment

B.2.4.3 Procedure

As a general rule, tests shall be carried out using a minimum of six test gases of traceable and certified
calorific value. The range of calorific values of these test gases should be wider than the required operational
range; it would be normal for one test gas calorific value to be slightly lower than the minimum of the
operational range and for one to be slightly higher than the maximum value of the operational range. Other
gases shall be regularly spaced in the measuring range.

For gas chromatographs, the tests as described shall be carried out using at least seven test gases of
traceable and certified composition. The concentration range for each component should be wider than the
required operational ranges; it would be normal for each component to be tested at one concentration slightly

41
BS EN 12405-2:2012
EN 12405-2:2012 (E)

lower than the specified minimum (except of course where that minimum is zero) and at one concentration
slightly higher than the specified maximum (except where this concentration is 100 %).

However, if the requirement is not fulfilled for the calibration gases having values slightly outside the
operational range, the corresponding tests may be restarted in order to better suit this range.

B.2.4.4 Acceptance criteria

The CVDD shall operate as designed.

The MPE of the CVDD shall conform to the requirements in 8.3 for reference conditions. However, if this
provision is not fulfilled for the calibration gases having values slightly outside the operational range, the
corresponding tests may be restarted in order to better suit this range.

B.2.5 Performance of the CVDD under the environmental influences and disturbances

B.2.5.1 General

If the CVDD is an assembly of several pieces of equipment, each piece of equipment shall be tested in its
declared environmental conditions according to Table B.1.

B.2.5.2 The CVDD performance test procedure - simplified

Tests are performed using at least one gas whose calorific value or composition differs the most of the one of
the gas(es) used for the adjustment, as far as available.

When submitted to the effect of influence factors and disturbances as provided for in 8.5, 8.6 and in Table B.1,
the equipment shall continue to operate correctly.

For each influence factor and disturbance, the CVDD shall comply with the MPE requirements specified in
Table B.1.

B.2.6 Additional tests of metrological performances of a CVDD.

B.2.6.1 Test conditions

In order to verify that a CVDD fulfils the applicable requirements, it is subject to the following provisions.

Prior to the tests, the CVDD is adjusted according to the manufacturer's procedure.

As far as applicable (see B.2.1), in the course of tests the CVDD is readjusted according to the adjustment
interval and the adjustment procedure specified by the manufacturer. Any adjustment is recorded and shall be
mentioned in the test report.

B.2.6.2 Repeatability

B.2.6.2.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that the CVDD repeatability conforms to the following requirements.

B.2.6.2.2 Procedure

The tests are carried out using gases of constant calorific value, or constant composition as the case may be,
but not necessarily of certified value.

Three gases are used, one close to the lowest calorific value, one close to the highest calorific value and one
approximately at the middle of the range. At least five (and normally not more than ten) measurements are
performed with each gas.

B.2.6.2.3 Acceptance criteria

The repeatability error of the CVDD shall be smaller than, or equal to 1/5 of the magnitude of the MPE.

B.2.6.3 Adjustment interval and drift

B.2.6.3.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that the adjustment interval and drift conform to the following requirements.

B.2.6.3.2 Procedure

The verification of the adjustment interval is made using the same gas at the beginning and the end of the
adjustment interval.

The same gases than those referred for repeatability tests are used.

At the beginning and the end of adjustment interval, the measurement of CV for the same gas shall be
repeated at least five times and the arithmetic mean of these results shall be calculated.

The drift shall be calculated as a difference between the arithmetic mean of the results measured at the
beginning and the end of the adjustment interval.

B.2.6.3.3 Acceptance criteria

The drift at the end of the adjustment interval shall be smaller than or equal to half of the magnitude of the
MPE. The adjustment interval and the adjustment procedure shall be specified by the manufacturer.

44
BS EN 12405-2:2012
EN 12405-2:2012 (E)

For CVDDs fitted with an automatic internal adjustment means, the means shall not be likely to drift and either
the adjustment shall be performed automatically at the end of the adjustment interval or a warning calling for
adjustment shall be generated automatically at the end of the adjustment interval.

B.2.6.4 Influence of the gas composition

B.2.6.4.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that the influence of the gas composition conforms to the following requirements.

B.2.6.4.2 Procedure

The test shall be performed using at least two gases of different compositions having approximately the same
calorific value (within ± 3%). For gas chromatographs three gases shall be used. These gases may be used
for accuracy tests laid down in B.2.4.3 in particular.

Three measurements are performed with each gas. For each gas, the mean value of the three results is
calculated.

The difference between the true value for gas 1 and the true value for gas 2 is calculated.

The difference between the mean value for gas 1 and the mean value for gas 2 is calculated.

The algebraic difference between the two differences shall be lower than the MPE.

Repeat and adapt the procedure if three gases are used.

B.2.6.4.3 Acceptance criteria

For gases of different compositions with the same calorific value, the influence of the gas composition on the
calorific value shall be smaller than or equal to two-fifths (2/5) of the magnitude of the MPE.

NOTE For this requirement, it is assumed that calibration gases are, as far as possible, free of systematic
components of uncertainties, for instance using calibration gases from the same manufacturer.

B.2.6.5 Response time

B.2.6.5.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that the influence of CV change due to a rapid change of gas composition (different
CV values) conforms to the following requirements.

B.2.6.5.2 Procedure

The gases used are the two used for tests in B.2.4.3 having the largest different calorific values. One is
supplied at the input of the CVDD for at least three measurements in order to get stabilised results.

The CVDD is then immediately supplied with the other gas in order to perform the number of necessary
measurements.

If there is a chance that the conclusion could be order dependent, the test shall be repeated changing the
order of the gases.

The following provisions are applicable to the CVDD itself and not to the CVDD complemented with the
sampling line.

B.2.6.5.3 Acceptance criteria

3
For any instantaneous change in calorific value at least equal to 5 MJ/m within the measuring range, the
change in indication after 1h shall be at least 99 % of the effective variation or as specified by the
3
manufacturer, whichever is lower. Consequently, the measuring range shall be at least 5 MJ/m .

B.2.6.6 Influence of gas supply

B.2.6.6.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that CVDD operate correctly when submitted to influences of supply gas pressure
and flow rates within ranges specified by the manufacturer.

B.2.6.6.2 Procedure

taking into consideration the state of the art. To that purpose, an influence smaller than one fifth of the
magnitude of the MPE is not considered significant.

B.2.6.8 Specific tests for calorimeters

B.2.6.8.1 Influence of atmospheric pressure

B.2.6.8.1.1 Objective

The objective is to verify that the calorimeter operates correctly when exposed to atmospheric pressure
changes.

B.2.6.8.1.2 Procedure

Tests are performed using at least one of those gases whose calorific value or composition differs the most
from one of the gas(es) used for the adjustment, as far as is available.

Tests are performed for the extreme environmental pressure conditions specified by the manufacturer.

B.2.6.8.1.3 Acceptance criteria

When submitted to the effect of this influence factor, the calorimeter shall continue to operate correctly and the
errors shall not exceed the MPE.

Annex I
(normative)

Testing of the data transmission interface of ECD

I.1 General
This Annex describes the testing of the data transmission interface of an ECD.

I.2 Data transmission interface tests procedure

The test is applicable for the transmission interfaces (applying a representation of coded data protocols), used
for data transmission between separate modules of the ECD.

The transmission tests are performed between a module (one of EC, CVDD or VCD) called as an “Equipment
Under a Test” - EUT and the “simulating apparatus” as a transmission partner.

The following checks shall be carried out:

 Each parameter declared for transmission that has an influence on the energy conversion calculation
shall be subject of verification.

 Transmission precision of the measured parameters shall be verified by a comparison of the transmitted
and received values. If a parameter value influences the transmission accuracy with respect to the
required accuracy limits, then a number of such tests (one test for one value) should depend on the type
of numerical coding used for tested parameter, specified in data transmission protocol. Transmission of
information generating an alarm event in the receiving module shall be verified by comparison of the
information transmitted and received.

 The performance of transmission interface under disturbances interrupting the transmission shall be
verified by at least one test when an interrupting disturbance is applied or an interruption generated by
the simulating apparatus.

 All parameters specifying the communication line performance (e.g. transmission speed, time parameters,
etc.) in ranges declared by the manufacturer shall be verified. Tests should be performed for their
maximum and/or minimum values, where it is substantial.
