Case 1. The Impartial Diagnosis (20 points)
Kennedy B. a junior high school was brought to a nearby hospital for a chief complain of
fever, severe muscle and joint pain and rash. Prior to his illness, he experienced malaise
and a mild muscle weakness. Upon admission, standard assessment was performed to
him including complete blood count. However, it was noted that his temperature was
38.8oC and his platelet count where below normal. Based from the clinical
manifestations, the doctor ordered supportive intravenous fluid therapy with Vitamin C
and diagnosed as a case of Dengue Fever. During the course of the disease, the patient
has developed bleeding in his gums and the presence of blood in his stool. Routine
differential blood counts where performed to monitor his red blood cells. By the end of
his second day in the hospital, his RBC’s where below normal values, as consequences
the physician ordered blood transfusion until his blood components will normalize.

Case 2. Fishing for an answer (20 points)
Lucia, the 19 year old daughter of Emilia G. had worked with her mother in the family
fish market only few weeks after leaving her position as a cashier in a nearby
supermarket. She enjoyed being a part of the family business despite the fact that it
was more demanding job than punching keys on cash register. Last Saturday, the index
finger on her left hand was “inoculated” by the dorsal fin of a blue fish she was
cleaning. Over the weekend, the area around the puncture remained red. On Monday
there was no particular change could be noted, but by Wednesday she experienced
discomfort and malaise. By Friday the area had become larger, was painful and swollen

and had taken on a violet-red hue. It was apparent to her and her mother that she had
some type of infection. She made an appointment later that day at a local clinic.
Standard assessment tools where administered to her and culture swab was later
confirmed that the pus contain significantly high viable counts of Staphylococcus aureus
beta hemolytic strains. The physician ordered antibiotics and informed Lucia to contact
her for possible changes in her present health status.

Case 3. The Nurse get infected. (10 points)
Three days before a nurse developed meningococcemia, she assisted with intubation of
a patient with a Neisseria meningitidis infection. Of the 24 medical personnel involved,
only this nurse became ill. The nurse recalled that she was exposed to nasopharyngeal
secretions and did not receive antibiotic prophylaxis. What two mistakes did the nurse
make? How is meningitis transmitted?

Case 5. The Eating Disorder (10 points)
Explain whether each of the following examples is a food infection or intoxication. What
is the probable etiological agent in each case? Which one is caused by endotoxin and
exotoxin? Please support your answer.
1. Eighty-two people in Louisiana developed diarrhea, nausea, headache, and fever
from 4 hours to 2 days after eating shrimp.
2. Two people in Vermont developed malaise, nausea, blurred vision, breathing
difficulty, and numbness 3 to 6 hours after eating barracuda caught in Florida.
Case 6. Your Role as a Future Nurse (10 points)
With the present situation that we are experiencing, what measures are you going to
establish in order to control the spread of COVID-19 in your locality. How would you
perform the 4 C’s of Control of Infectious Diseases? Kindly react on the Pro’s and Con’s
of the Government’s effort to contain the disease by promoting Rapid Assessment,
Monitoring, Prevention, Surveillance, Outbreak control and Disease Management.
