Program Objectives
Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures
Earthquakes have caused vast devastation of infrastructure systems and facilities and have exposed the deficiencies in the
existing design and construction practices. These disasters have created a new awareness about the disaster preparedness and
mitigation. This in turn has created a demand for understanding and exposure to earthquake engineering in design and practice.

Objectives
w To give an exposure to earthquake engineering
w To introduce fundamentals of structural dynamics relevant to earthquake resistant design
w To understand the behavior of concrete structures during earthquakes
w To introduce elements of design and ductile detailing of structures with reference to relevant BIS codes
w To give exposure to seismic retrofitting strategies of concrete structures

Machine Foundation Design basis

This course will enable practicing engineers to understand the
dynamics of machine foundation system. The course covers basic
fundamentals necessary for understanding and evaluating the
dynamic responses of a machine foundation system.
The course content includes loads induced by different
machinery, modes of structural response of the foundation
and/or supporting frame, as well as the response and damping
provided by the soils. It covers fundamentals of machine
dynamics for derivation of the applied loads, behaviour of types of
rigid block and pile-supported foundations, analysis and design
of tabletop structures for equipment support. The course shall
cover, in detail, the guidelines set by BIS, the concepts and Faculty
practical “rules of thumb” used in preliminary layout and sizing of
the foundations and focus on explanation and demystifying of
the basic concepts, relating them to the first principles of
engineering.
