UK Travel Guide for Students

Documents
Please ensure that you procure the following documents well in advance to your departure.

1. Valid passport & visa


2. Air ticket
3. CAS statement from university/college
4. Tuition fee receipt
5. All original educational and supporting credentials - 10th, 12th, Degree, experience,
birth certificate (if required), IELTS, Front and back pages of Passport, VISA (A set of
notarized documents recommended)
6. Visa decision letter/BRP instruction letter which was received through email
7. Financial proof (Bank documents submitted for VISA process)
8. Visa application form
9. Accommodation address upon arrival -- temporary/permanent
10. Ensure that you have completed all medical tests as advised by Immigration/Provider
(Take a print out of the medicals acknowledgement)
11. Ensure that you have completed your insurance formalities as advised by your
Provider/Immigration.(IHS confirmation email)
12. Required amount of Currency of the country (£1000-£1500), in the form of travel
card (highly recommendable) or liquid cash.
13. Photo identifications apart from passport(driver's license, voter’s ID etc)
14. Birth Certificate(If necessary)

1. Packing for departure

(Please consult with your carrier company on your baggage allowance)

Essential Documents (Please file your entire documents and carry it in your hand luggage)

 Passport
 Air ticket
 Letter of offer/CAS from your Institution (or) a confirmation of enrolment
 Extension letter issued by the institution. (optional)
 Document of accommodation abroad with the proper address and phone number.
 Receipts of any related payments you have made including tuition fees, health cover,
accommodation fees, charges for airport pick up etc.
 All original certificates and other important documents
 2 ID proof. i.e., Passport and any one of the following: Voter’s identity card/ Driving
License/Ration card with notarized English translation)
 Birth certificate
 Traveller’s cheques or sufficient cash
 2 Reference letters from different authorities of your employer/ College etc. with whom
you were working or studying within the period of last two years.
 8 Passport size photos.
2. Immigration Clearance

 Be prepared to explain to the immigration officer about the whereabouts of the


institution you are admitted to, course and your future plans. Also keep handy your Letter
of offer, academic records, financial documents, accommodation address and emergency
contact numbers.
 Do not panic to any of the questions, listen carefully to the questions and answer
confidently. Do your homework well. Be thorough with the web site and the Institution
you are admitted to.
 After Immigration check you must then pick up your luggage. To find your luggage go
to the baggage claims area. Look at the screens displayed to show the belt number. In
that screen you can find the flight number you have come and the belt number where
your luggage will come. Go to the belt number and your luggage will come through that
belt. Collect the same and make sure you take only your luggage. If you can’t find your
luggage, please approach the desk nearby who deals with luggage and report to them
that your luggage is lost or not found. Hand over them the slip you got for your luggage at
the time of boarding. Then they will help you to find out the same.

3. Things To Remember

 Take only good quality winter clothes (eg., T shirts, Sweaters, Jeans, Winter garments,
Monkey caps, gloves, hooded sweatshirts, hand gloves, jackets etc). Day-to-day wear-
Prepare for every type of weather: hot, cold and wet. Clothes for
sports/socities/volunteering
 Make an additional set of your certificates and important documents and keep it in your
checked-in baggage. This will be useful to you if happen to lose your hand luggage.
 Name your luggage with Name, Student ID, Passport Number and Institution’s address
and contact number.
 Do not carry too many woolen or warm clothes. These are bulky and will occupy space
that can be used for more important/useful things.
 Take a good quality laptop with licensed windows 7(pirated version might not operate
well) and all the software’s installed, with a backpack carrier.
 Before you leave to the UK, take a high speed net connection at your home and get Skype
installed, with a web camera and a headphone with Mic at your home and teach your
parents how to use net, email and Skype. You can communicate with your dear and near
at home with the cheapest rates.
 Any medicine you take along should be accompanied by a letter from your doctor
authenticating its use. (Bills must be carried)
 Sufficient warm clothing, for your arrival and initial stay!
 Casual clothing to wear on campus, for example jeans and T-shirt is fine
 Your national costume! It’s very likely that you will have opportunity to show off your
national costume during your stay in UK, other students love to learn more about different
cultures. (Pack a set or two).
 Photos of family and friends to help stop you feeling homesick.
4. CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) Registration
(Necessary to get work placement for Doctors, Nurses, Social workers, Lawyers and other
healthcare applicants who handles potentially delicate age group ). Do carry below documents
for CRB registration. Institution will guide you on the application mode.
 A police clearance certificate from your home country.
 CV (Curriculum Vitae) with detailed explanation on the gap, if any.
 Educational certificates and transcripts.
 Job references letter with the address, name and contact details of the employer on each
reference.
 Original birth certificate.
 Original Marriage certificate.
 A second form of photo ID other than your passport (such as driving license).
 A list of all addresses you lived at over the past 10 years.
 A list of all work places over the past 5 years.

5. Do’s & Dont’s

 Do not carry extra luggage other than the limit specified by the airline.
 You can carry preserved food but try to avoid meat and fish pickles.
 You can carry food items (Rice, pulses, Pickles, Jams, and Jellies etc) in plastic containers,
properly sealed. Do not carry any of these in your hand luggage.
 Do not carry aerosol cans, oils, pickles, pastes, cream etc in your hand luggage. · Buy
good quality bags, you don’t want to have its parts coming off when travel all the way
from India to the UK.
 Try to avoid glass wares e.g., Crockery since chances of breakage is higher.
 Do not pack any sharp objects such as scissors or anything potentially explosive
like spray cans in your hand luggage.
 Don’t pack any controlled drugs
 Don’t pack offensive weapons, for example flick knives
 Don’t pack self-defence sprays, for example pepper spray and CS gas
 endangered animal and plant species
 Don’t pack rough diamonds
 Don’t pack indecent and obscene materials, such as books, magazines, films and DVDs
 Don’t pack personal imports of meat and dairy products from most non-EU countries

6. Tips
 Be cheerful and polite and always stick on to the basic etiquettes like “Sorry” and “Thank
you” wherever necessary.
 Label your suitcases with the telephone number and address of the Institution you are
admitted to. Make a list of the contents in the suitcases and hand bags.
 You should gather maximum information about your program provider, course & about
UK before your departure to the U.K.
 Learn to use computers and the basic software’s. Be tech-Savvy.
 If you are a nurse and admitted to a student’s program then try to upgrade your
IELTS score to Individual 7 band, since for nurses they can get paid stipend if they have
a IELTS 7 & NMC decision letter.
 Be prepared to walk a lot hence take along with you good quality formal shoes and casual
slippers. Buy strong shoes with good gripped soles (eg. Woodlands shoes).
 While you travel, to keep yourself warm it is better to wear more thin layers of
clothes rather than one thick sweater.
 You should leave photocopies of all documents and serial numbers including that of the
traveller’s cheque with your family so that in case any of them is lost you could track.

7. Warning

The importation of drugs could result in your imprisonment. Be cautious about carrying
packages or baggage for strangers.

SMUGGLING AND FALSE RECEIPTS

There are heavy penalties for concealing dutiable goods from Customs and for making false
declarations. When purchasing expensive items overseas, such as jewellery and electronic
equipment, you may be offered a false receipt which shows a purchase price lower than you
actually paid as a means of reducing the Customs charges payable. Do not succumb to these
temptations. Concealment of dutiable goods and the presentation of false documentation
are serious offenses which may result in the seizure of the articles, as well as having to pay
a substantial penalty. You may also be prosecuted.

 Dishwashing detergent
 Plates, Mug and Tiffin box (must be microwave friendly)
 Plastic/Steel containers for keeping leftovers will help you to avoid wasting food
and money. Clingfilm, foil and sandwich/freezer bags are also useful for storing
food

Note: Buy branded items preferably from a super market so that the packing should
have a barcode. And buy the necessary things according to your need until you find
a grocery store.

 A dictionary: this can be very useful, especially at the beginning of your studies
(pocket dictionary – or smart phone application is enough)
 Locks and Securities: Try to purchase a TSA Approved Locks and keys for
your checked baggage. TSA Approved Keys are available at Major travel stores
and airports. Some branded bags have built in TSA Locks
 Travel Bags -Purchase your bags only after you confirm your air ticket so as
to know the exact baggage allowance.
 Finance and Currency - carry at least 1000 Pounds for your initial expenses
at UK.
Note: 1. Please ensure that you label all your baggage
2. Please make a list of items packed in each bags (check-in baggage and hand bag)
and keep it in your mobile for ready reference. You can keep the hard copy of this list
in each bags also if necessary. (Very important)
