HELPFUL HINTS FOR PRE-DEPARTURE

Prior to Leaving Home

1. Check expiry dates on all important pieces of identification. ie: Passport must have six months validity,
driver’s license, OHIP card.

2. Provide a final complete original set of your university/college transcripts indicating degree/diploma has
been awarded to KOM. You will not be able to start classes until this is received. We strongly recommend
taking a second set with you in your luggage.

3. Book your flight. Ensure your flight is booked to arrive at least one week prior to the orientation dates.

4. Complete airport reception and/or temporary accommodation forms where available. Most, but not all
universities in the Ireland will have airport reception. Should the university have an airport pick up service,
you will need to fill out the online form. You will not be picked up at the airport unless the university receives
your completed airport reception form at least 72 hours prior to arrival. If a university offers to arrange
temporary accommodation upon arrival, this form must also be received by the uni at least 72 hours prior to
arrival.

5. OSAP forms (if applicable) should be sent to and completed by your school as early as possible. Each student
is responsible for sending their own documentation to OSAP directly.

6. Get familiar with your university and the location it is in. Research websites.

7. For private off-campus accommodation through real estate agents, we strongly recommend that you do not
sign any leases or make rental decisions while still in Canada. Off-campus commercial accommodation
listings on the university websites can be booked in advance. For an idea of costs, locations and rental units
check https://www.collegecribs.ie/. Finding off-campus student accommodation can be done through the
University Housing Office. Check the university accommodation webpage for more details.

8. You may wish to open a credit card account as it may be difficult for overseas students to obtain a credit card
once in Ireland if there are no prior credit ratings.

9. Bank accounts can be opened in advance or upon arrival in Ireland during the week you arrive with proper
ID.

10. We recommend students assign a Power of Attorney to someone to handle your affairs at home.

11. All students require Over Seas Health Coverage (OSHC), regardless of personal/family health plans. Make
sure you have received your OSHC documents from your school. Your OSHC will last the duration of your
studies.

12. Prior to leaving, it is recommended that you contact the OHIP office to advise of your time away to ensure
your OHIP card remains valid.
