These mathematical skills are displayed in their daily observations, through play and everyday activities. The concepts of numbers, shapes, sizes, mass, height, length, capacity, time and money are acquired at an early age, although not quite systematically. When children play with sand or water, they are learning the basic concepts of volurne and capacity. When they choose a bigger bag of sweets instead of a smaller one, they display understanding of the relationship between size, mass and volume. Hence in teaching children how to measure, we need only to guide and facilitate their on-going daily activities of observing, estimating and comparing things. Learning Skills Series: Mathematics is written to enhance children’s basic concepts in Mathematics. This series is made up of three books, ‘one book for each level from Nursery to Kindergarten 2.
