It might look strange, but it’s just a normal text message. Text messaging is a smart way to
communicate in the 21st century. It’s especially common among the young generation. Nowadays, if
parents have ever looked at children’s conversations via text or seen how they chat on social media,
they might wonder what their children are talking about. Text language can feel like a completely
new language. Some common examples are ‘BRB’ or ‘2day’ when they want to say ‘Be right back’
or ‘today’. Teenagers are also communicating more with emojis, gifs and memes than ever before.
Some people believe that it’s important for texting to be fast, short and clear. As a result, text
language needs to be easy to read and write. Moreover, teens also use slang and text language as a
way to create their own identity, or to fit into specific social groups. Sometimes, it’s just because
they think it’s kind of fun. Other people worry that text language has a negative effect on teenagers’
writing skills. However, there is no evidence for it.
36. Parents may have difficulty understanding children’s text messages. True____________
37. There are fewer emojis and memes used now than in the past. False____________

Audio script:
Presenter: Hello and welcome to You Talk! It’s Sunday morning, the time is 11 a.m., and we’re
talking about our family. Our first caller is Conner. Hi, Connor, can you tell us about your family?
Connor: Hi everyone, my name is Connor and I have a brother, a stepsister, and a half-brother. It
sounds strange and complicated.
Presenter: Yes, it is. Tell us more about your brothers and sisters.
Connor: First, my brother, David, is two years older than me. He and I are from Dad’s first
marriage. After my mum and dad got divorced, Dad married Anna. She has a daughter, Sophie, who
is our stepsister. After four years, Bill was born. Bill and I have the same dad but different mothers,
so we’re half-brothers.
Presenter: Do you get on well with your brothers and stepsister?
Connor: Yes, we hardly ever argue. We spend a lot of time playing sports together, helping each
other and sharing the chores.
Presenter: What’s your stepsister like?
Connor: Sophie is very tidy and organized. She plans everything and knows where everything is.
She tidies up her room almost every day.
Presenter: How about your brother?
Connor: David is quite untidy. He never puts his clothes away, so his room is always in a mess. But
he’s very intelligent. He always helps me with my homework. I can talk to him about anything.
Presenter: And what’s your little half-brother like?
Connor: Bill is just five years old. He’s cute, but sometimes he’s a bit noisy. And he’s quite shy. He
often hides behind my dad when there are strangers around. I love my family so much.
Presenter: Thanks for your sharing, Connor. Have a nice day and goodbye.
