Pri 16JT D roduct Double-Effect Hermetic Absorption Liquid Chiller Nominal 100 to 1700 Tons 4? - PARTE DE DOCUMENTACION Carrier's 16/7 Double-Etfect Hermetic Absorption Liquid Chillers Provide an Alternative Means of Efficient, Cost Effective Water Chiling. By Utilizing High-Pressure Steam, 16JT Chillers Avoid High-Cost Electricity and Qualify for Utility Rebates and Incen- tives as a Gas Cooling Product. no CFC’s; environmentally safe ‘* two-stage high-elficiency design reduces energy costs ‘quiet, vibration-tree operation ‘* few moving parts means high reliability Features/Benefits High-pressure steam-fired absorption reduces energy costs, providing economical water chilling and/or process cooling. Cost-effective cooling Alternative-energy water chilling — The 16IT offers an alternative to chillers driven by increasingly expensive electrical energy. The use of steam- powered absorption not only eliminates demand charges and high cost electrical usage, but aso allows the owner to take advantage of gas cooling rebates and incentive programs offered by many utility companies. The 16JT is there- fore economical io own and operate compared to other types of chillers. Double-effect absorption cycle increases efficiency — The double- effect cycle ulizes both a high: and low-stage generator, providing 2 stages of solution concentration which reduce the energy consumption accordingly. The 16JT chiller offers typical full-load steam rates of less than 10 Ib/hrton at Copyright 1989 Cartier Corporation Form 16J7-1PD standard ARI (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute) operating conditions Proven features provide optimum part-load performance — Carrier's concentration control system allows stable operation at reduced cooling Water temperatures as low as 59 F (15 C), for greater improvement in partoad operation. In addition, an internal control valve automatically maintains optimum solution flow to the two generators at all operating concl- tions for maximum efficiency. This control valve is completely intemal to ensure the vacuum integrity of the machine. A bolton cover provides easy ‘access to the valve when required. Condensate drain heat exchanger saves energy — Every 16JT incorpo- rates a condensate drain heat ex- changer which reduces steam con- surnption, resulting in further energy savings, Valuable energy (in the form of heat) in the condensate leaving the generator is transferred to the weak lithium bromide solution as itis pumped to the generator. This reduces the amount of energy required to operate the chiller at both full and part load conditions. Application versatility Designed to suit a variety of applications — From comfort cooling to providing chilled water for process applications, the 16JT double-effect absorption chill offers versatility for almost any job where high-pressure steam is available as the heat source. With the largest number of model sizes, the most extensive capacity range commercially available, and with its compact design, the Carrier 16JT is sure to be the right choice for either new construction or retrofit applica- tions. chiller while using the other to handle peak load requirements. Hybrid chiller systems have proven to be an economi- cal solution for many comfort cooling installations, In many geographical areas, it may be advantageous to operate the electric chiller as the base loaded machine while utiizing the absorption chiller during peak load conditions to avoid or reduce electric demand charges. Depending on utility rate structures, a 16T absorption chiller used in conjunction with an electric chiller may be the most viable choice to consider. Available in 31 standard sizes, the 16JT spans a wide capacity range — Sizes 810-880 offer nominal ‘capacities from 100 to 680 tons in 17 ‘model sizes. Fourteen additional sizes (models 080-150L) complete the standard product line through 1700 tons. Carrier's computerized perfor- mance ratings assist you in selecting the right machine, properly sized to meet exact job requirements Combine absorption and electric chillers — Utilizing both absorption and electric chillers in a central plant offers the flexibility to base load one Table of contents Page Features/Benefits 17 Model Number Nomenclature beeen bese sees Option and Accessories.... soos 8 Machine Components 9 Physical Data. 10-13 Dimensions. 14,15 Performance Data 16-18 Application Data 19-22 Electrical Data .......... 12-1623, 24 Typical Control Sequence 25 ‘Typical Piping and Wiring ... 26 Guide Specifications. 27-30 Model number nomenclature 16 JT 847 Absorption Citar Unit sie Double-Etfect (2-Stage) ©, ( Location and installation savings Ease of installation — All 16J7's are completely fabr- cated, assembled and wired in the factory as single piece Units, Standard shipping configuration is either 1 or 2-piece, depending on model size. Refer to the Standard Shipping Configuration table below. vee fo Model sizes 810-880 and 080-100 are shipped completely assembled as standard with an option for 2 piece shipment, making the chiller ideal for retrofit or replacement installa- tions where access into the equipment room may be limited. Larger model sizes are shipped in 2 pieces as standard for easier handling and rigging. TYPICAL 16JT 2-PIECE SHIPMENT (RIGGING OF ABSORBER/EVAPORATOR SECTION) Re-assembly and alignment of the two sections at the jobsite is simplified by having the unit pre-erected in the factory and by the incorporation of weld-type assembly flanges on all interconnecting piping, Flanged waterbox nozzles — All waterbox nozzles on the evaporator, absorber, condenser and generator are supplied with ANSI (American National Standards Institute) rf (raised face) flanges, simplifying chiller installation and field piping, Condensate drain heat exchanger is factory installed — ‘This energy-saving feature, consisting of a shelhand-tube heat exchanger and a float/trap assembiy, is completely factory mounted and piped. There is no need for an addi- tional trap in the condensate piping, thus reducing jobsite Piping costs ‘Single point electrical connection — Installation costs are further reduced by eliminating field wiring between machine components. All unit mounted electrical items are factory-wired to the control panel requiring only a single point electrical connection to the chiller from the building's electrical service. A multitap transformer mounted in the panel provides secondary single-phase power for the 167. controls ‘The 164T offers flexibility in location selection — Low sound levels are characteristic of absorption chilers, primarily due to the fact that the refrigerant and solution pumps ate the only rotating parts. The sound level of a 165T 's typically as low as 75 doA, allowing the chiller to be installed in areas with strict sound requirements. In addition, the low vibration levels of a 16JT make it possible to install the chiller above grade or in the proximity of occupied spaces or areas that are sensitive to sound and vibration. Low maintenance Convenient maintenance is an integral part of the Carrier design — All moving parts are easily accessible. Hinged waterbox covers allow easy tube and waterbox inspection. Epoxy coated tube sheets, waterboxes and covers protect surfaces against corrosion and extend machine life, Factory-Trained Service Organization — Canes extensive service organization offers trained and experienced service technicians in every major city. In addition to routine maintenance and repair services, Carrier also offers a wide array of preventative maintenance, full maintenance, and/or extended service contracts Features/Benefits (cont) Leakproof hermetic pumps cut maintenance costs — Carriers proven solution and refrigerant pump/motors are leakproof, completely self-contained, and hermetically sealed. Hermetic design eliminates the need for a separate, complicated, and possibly leakprone seal water system and. auxiliary water piping, while providing leaktightness and longer machine life. There are no packing glands or seals to maintain - air can not leak in, fluids can not leak out. Specially designed bearings absorb both radial and axial thnusts to assure correct fit at all times. Lubrication and cooling is done by the fluid being pumped, so there is no possibilty of external contamination. In addition, both the rotor and stator are separated by a stainless steel liner protecting the windings from the fluid being pumped. For an ‘added measure of safety, thermal overload switches are ‘embedded in the stator to protect against high winding temperature. The pumps are field serviceable, and inspec- tion is recommended after either 5 years or 20,000 hours of operation, whichever occurs first. Pump isolation valves are purposely not included in order to minimize potential leak paths into the machine and because of the exception- ally bigh reliability of the pump/motor assembles, 16JT CONTROL PANEL Reliable operation 16JT Control system features automatic monitor- ing and precise control of machine operation — Each Carrier 16J7 absorption chiller includes a factory mounted and wired control panel which is functionally tested prior to shipment. Monitoring of machine operation is done automatically with multiple LED's (ight-emitting diodes) on the front of the panel identifying various chiller modes of operation and fault indication. A microproces- sor based temperature indicating controller is also standard which can be programmed to the specific requirements of each job. All control panel components are UL-Listed (Underwriters' Laboratories) and include a molded case circuit breaker, pump contactors, ambient-compensated 3- pphase pump overload protection, multitap control power transformer, steam demand limiter, hour meter, alarm buzzer, and all necessary safeties and controls for machine ‘operation. Other standard features include a remote start/ stop circuit and a key-locked panel door to protect against unauthorized access, 4 LEGEND 1.- Crouation Pipe 6 ~ Stalor Liner 10 ~ Thrust Bearing (Front) 2 ~ Radiat Bearing (Rear) 7 — Rotor Liner 11 — Rada Bearing (Front) 42 Cyne ha CHILLED WATER Oremrccravr © SOLUTION, LowsTace PUMP: PUMP HEAT EXCHANGER CONCENTRATED REFRIGERANT REFRIGERANT pee Liou Lsr VAPOR au LOD —Level Control Device TE — Temperature Controller (Capacity Contr!) 16JT ABSORPTION CYCLE.
