6. Substantiation:

a. Lecture is used to introduce trainees to new concepts, provide background and to


provide an overview of theory components of this EO; and

b. Explain-Demonstrate-Imitate (EDI) is used to provide trainees with a


demonstration of practical skills involved in this EO and to provide trainees an
opportunity to practice, under supervision, while being provided feedback.

7. Resources Required:

a. First aid manual – 1 copy per trainee


b. Scene survey kit – containing “hazard” materials
c. Nitrile gloves
d. Gym mats - for first aiders to kneel on during practice
e. Blankets – for peers to lay on during practice

8. Test Details: EC – Theory-based written assessment. The trainees will be given 50


minutes to write the test. Feedback will be provided in written form.

9. Remarks: Practice provided during this EO is not meant to attain mastery of skills but to
allow for basic skill development. All concepts and skills presented in this EO will be
practiced throughout the course during instructional scenarios and assessments.
EO 002.02 Perform resuscitation

3. Standard: The trainee shall perform resuscitation by:

a. Recognizing signs and symptoms of a cardiovascular emergency to include;

1) Heart attack;
2) Angina;
3) Stroke; and
4) Transient ischemic attack.

b. Providing first aid for a cardiovascular emergency to include:

1) Performing a scene survey;


2) Performing a primary survey;
3) Placing the casualty at rest; and
4) Assisting the casualty in taking prescribed medication.

c. Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an adult, child and infant by:

1) Opening airway;
2) Checking for breathing;
3) Giving compressions;
4) Giving breaths.

d. Defibrillating with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) by:


1) Powering on the AED
2) Following voice prompts to include:
a) Attaching electrode pads;
b) Clearing area;
c) Pressing shock button; and
d) Continuing CPR.

8. Test Details:

a. EC – Practical based. 10 min per trainee. Each trainee will be presented a scenario
where they must take over CPR from another rescuer for an adult casualty. Each
trainee must complete 2 cycles of CPR, then will be required to use the AED.

b. PC – Practical based. 20 min per trainee. Each trainee will be presented a scenario
where they must manage an emergency scene including scene survey, primary
survey, providing first aid to an adult with a cardiovascular emergency, then upon
resuscitation of the casualty, complete a secondary survey and provide ongoing
casualty care.

9. Remarks: Assessment timings based on a 5:1 student to instructor ratio. Multiple


instructors may be required to assist with assessments depending on course loading.
