Technical Specifications of Surge Protection Devices (SPD) as per IEC Std.

Surge Protection Device connected in the mains power supply, needed to protect the electrical and
electronic equipment, should be able to withstand 100 KA (10/350sec). As per IEC 62305-1, LPL 1
(Lightning Protection Level) maximum expected lightning current is 200 KA. As explained in IEC
62305,100 KA will be dissipated in earth and the balance 100 KA will reach the electrical supply lines.
Power Line SPD’s are to be connected at the mains incoming panel and in addition Distribution Boards
which are more than 15 meters away from the incoming panel. DB’s which are feeding power to critical
and sophisticated electronic equipment, SPD’s must be installed ignoring the cable distance. Suitable
SPD’s also to be used in all Telecommunication, Signalling, automation and instrumentation equipment
according to the Zone concept explained in IEC 62305 for a perfect protection of complete electronic
installations. All SPDs should be tested and ensure performance requirements according to IEC 61643

 Mains power panel/ grid entry point

Protection at the main incomer of the power supply system has to be connected at the Main Distribution
Board after the incoming breaker.

need protection. This is called gradual reduction of surges at the respective zone interfaces and at the
equipment input level.

Technical Specifications of Direct Lightning Protection

General
Lightning Protection System (LPS) is to protect structures including their installations, contents,
persons & services connected to the structure against direct and indirect effects of Lightning. The
LPS shall be in accordance with IEC 62305, IS:2309 & IS 3043. The protection in detail shall
include the following;

1. Protection of the structure against direct flash

2. Protection of human beings inside and designated areas such pathways outside the
building.
3. Protection of all services connected to the building and protection of electrical and
electronic equipments inside the building.

Material Specifications: (Schedule)

1. Material
Air termination rod: Aluminium
Air termination conductor: Aluminium
Down conductor: Aluminium
All connectors: Stainless Steel
2. Cross section:
Horizontal air termination conductor: Round conductor, 8 mm diameter
Vertical air termination rod: round conductor 10 mm diameter up to 1 meter height, 16 mm
diameter up to 2 meter height and up to 4 meters 40 mm diameter
3. Grid size: 10 meter x 10 meter

Components of External LPS

1.) Air terminal (as per rolling sphere or mesh or protective angle method or any
combination thereof.)
2.) Down conductor
3.) Earthing

1) Air termination system:

No drilling or welding is allowed in the terrace for fixing the air terminal.

Values of Rolling sphere radius, Mesh size and protection angle as per Class of
LPL/LPS.

1 20 5*5 Depends on height
2 30 10*10 the building
3 45 15*15
4 60 20*20
 Air terminal holder

Conductors shall be securely fixed on the terrace by means of air terminal holder
which is fixed on the roof by adhesive of good quality taking care of varying weather
conditions. Air conductor holder is an insulator & should be of minimum 50 mm
height so that even small amount of water logging on terrace is below the level of
conductor holder. Air terminal holder shall not be more than 0.5 m apart for a flat
conductor & 1m for round conductor of at least 8mm diameter & 1.0 meter apart for
vertical run

Recommended distance between air terminal holders.

 Need for Expansion piece

In order to take care the expansion of the metal in summer and contraction of the
metal in winter, expansion piece with suitable connectors have to be used at every
20m distance of horizontal air terminal.

2.) Down conductor system:

In order to reduce the probability of damage to electronic/electrical equipments , the

down conductors shall be arranged in such a way that from the point of strike to
earth, several parallel current paths should exist & length of the current path should
be minimum .Down conductors can be installed separately or more wisely it can be
part of natural components of the building Examples are steel reinforcement in RCC
columns, metal facades, profile rails, metal doors & windows. Down conductors
should be installed at each exposed corner of the structure.
Material of air terminal, down conductor, earth termination etc. shall be as below:

Material May be destroyed by galvanic coupling wit

Copper(Solid) GI and Aluminum
Hot galvanized steel(Solid) Copper
Stainless steel(Solid) ………
Aluminum(Solid) Copper

Dissimilar metals (For eg: copper with Aluminum) must be connected only by using
bimetal connectors.

conductors

3. )Earth Terminations:

Earth mat is most preferable. Where earth mat is not possible, ring earthing is the
next best method. Ring earthing must be 1 meter away from the building and 0.5m
below the ground level. The resistance of earthing system shall not exceed 10 ohm as
per IEC 62305. Lower earth resistance is still better.

For earth termination system, 2 basic types of earth electrode arrangements are
applicable.
Type A & Type B arrangement.

Type A arrangement: comprises of horizontal or vertical earth electrode installed

outside the structure to be protected connected to each down conductor. In type A
arrangement, the total number of earth electrodes shall not be less than two.
Type A arrangement is suitable in places where electronic equipments are not
located.

Type B arrangement: This type of arrangement comprises either a ring

conductor external to the structure to be protected, in contact with the soil for
atleast 80% of its total length or a foundation earth electrode. Such earth
electrodes can also be meshed. For structures with extensive electronic systems
or with high risk of fire, type B earthing is most preferable method. Corrosion
proofing band has to be used wherever down conductor is connected to earth

Lightning equipotential bondingt

The function of a lightning protection system is to discharge lightning current and to distribute
them in the ground. To minimise hazardous potential differences between all electrical equipment
in the inner lightning protection zone, a low-impedance equipotential bonding network must be
established. In addition, the integration of the earth-termination system in the equipotential
bonding system does not only ensure low impedance, but also an increased current carrying
capability of the equipotential bonding network to be established.

These goals can be achieved by an intermeshed equipotential bonding network. To this end, all
conductive parts of the structure and the internal system are integrated in this network and all
metal parts or conductive lines at the boundaries of each LPZ (lightning protection zone) are
connected directly or via adequate surge protective devices.
