SECTION 4. FIRST AID MEASURES

4.1 Measures to be taken in case of contact

Eye
Adverse effect is not expected with this substance.
In case of exceptional contact, immediately flush eye with plenty of water for at least 10
minutes. Get medical attention if severe or sudden eye pain develops.
Skin
Adverse effect is not anticipated with this substance.
Ingestion
Not considered as a potential exposure route
Inhalation
Nitrogen gas asphyxiation occurs to personnel when exposed to a high concentration. PROMPT
MEDICAL ATTENTION IS MANDATORY IN ALL CASES WHEN NITROGEN IS INHALED UNDER
PRESSURE. Do not enter enclosure or confined space when there is a high possibility that
nitrogen gas being released inside that space. When attempting to rescue a person in the
confined space, use Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. Rescue only by trained person.
Unconscious person should be assisted to uncontaminated area and inhale fresh air. Quick

removal from the contaminated area is most important. Further treatment should be
symptomatic and supportive. Apply artificial respiration.

4.2 Important symptoms or effect

Victim may not be aware when he is exposed to nitrogen gas. Exposed to high concentration
with low oxygen content cause asphyxiation. Symptoms are unconscious, loss of mobility and
respiratory arrest.

4.3 Immediate medical attention or special treatment needed

None

SECTION 5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

5.1 Fire and explosion hazards

Cylinder may rupture violently from pressure when involved in a fire situation.

5.2 Extinguishing media

Spray water to keep cylinder cool. Appropriate extinguishing agent such as dry powder, foam or
carbon dioxide shall be use.

5.3 Specific hazards arising from substance.

None.

5.4 Fire fighting instructions

Firefighters should wear self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and protective clothing and
standard equipment. Continue to cool fire-exposed containers until well after flames are
extinguished.

SECTION 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Evacuate the area. Ensure adequate air ventilation. Prevent from entering sewers, basements
or work pits. Stop the leak if it is safe to do so. Evacuate all personnel from affected area.
Wear self contained breathing apparatus when entering the area. Use gas detectors.

6.2 Environmental precautions

Stop the leak if it is safe to do so.

6.3 Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Provide natural or forced ventilation.

SECTION 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1 Precaution for safe handling

Only trained personnel familiar with high pressure gas hazards are allowed to work with
nitrogen and its equipment. Nitrogen is an inert gas and can be used with all materials of
construction. Pure nitrogen only slightly lighter than air and readily mixes with air at room
temperature. Ensure enclosure or confined space are well ventilated before attempting to enter
the area.
When opening nitrogen cylinder valve, ensure that you are in well ventilated place. Slowly open
the valve. Shut off cylinder valve and secure the cylinder when not in use.

7.2 Condition for the safe storage, including any incompatibility

Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated areas away from
heavily trafficked areas, emergency exits, and flammable combustibles. Do not allow the
temperature where cylinders are stored in exceed 125°F (52°C). Cylinders should be stored
upright and firmly secured. Practice a “first in- first out” inventory system to prevent full
cylinders being stored for excessive periods of time. Post “NO SMOKING OR OPEN FLAMES” sign
in the storage area or use area.

SECTION 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

8.1 Control Parameters

Nitrogen is not listed in exposure limit data.

8.2 Appropriate Engineering Control

It is necessary to develop a risk assessment to a well defined situation or activities and to
recognized the risk of asphyxiation due to high concentration of nitrogen in atmosphere.
General Ventilation
Consider a Permit to Work system. A good general ventilation should be sufficient to control the
nitrogen-rich environment. Check system for leakage on regular interval.

8.3 Individual Protection Measures

Eye Protection
Safety goggles or glasses as recommended in a risk assessment of the job.

Skin Protection
Protective hand glove made of leather or cotton and fabric should be sufficient.
Body Protection
Personal protection for the body should be selected based on the task being performed and the
risks involved.
Respiratory Protection
A positive pressure self contained breathing apparatus shall be used in case of emergency to
prevent inward leakage of dangerous gases.
Other/General Protection
Appropriate footwear and additional skin protection measures should be selected based on the
task performed and the risk involved.

8.4 Hygiene Measures

Do not drink, eat or smoke at the nitrogen working area. Practice a good industrial hygiene and
safety procedures.
