The water supply situation in Uco, a rural mountain village in
Peru, was precarious. In order to get to clean drinking water,
the inhabitants had to undertake long and dangerous treks in
the mountains to get to a mountain lake, as there was no well
or running water in the village. Due to this the hygiene
conditions were bad and protection from illnesses was not
guaranteed.
Construction of water conduits
In order to improve the situation for the inhabitants, water
conduits were installed between the mountain lake and the
village. In the municipality itself water stations were
constructed, securing the access to clean drinking water for
the inhabitants ever since. For this project the Clean Water

Transporting
foundation supported the organisation Associazione Don
Bosco, which is strongly anchored in the country and works
closely with the local authorities and population.
Clean drinking water for 250 families
Following a construction period of two years in rocky mountains
the two water conduits could start operating. Through this, 250
families in Uco have access to clean drinking water and are
therefore better protected from illnesses. The new water
system has also stopped the previously increasing exodus from
the town.
