The pH of a cosmetic product affects its effectiveness and how it feels on the skin. A higher pH causes greater disruption of the skin's acid mantle, which protects the skin. A pH that is too alkaline can cause dryness and reduced skin hydration. Changing the skin's pH alters the acid mantle, changes the composition of skin bacteria, and affects enzyme activity in the epidermis. Lactic acid, which is naturally produced during physical activity, can be used to correct products that have a pH that is too acidic or alkaline. It must be added last during production when the emulsion's pH is between 5 and 5.5. At low doses, lactic acid provides extra hydration to the skin.
