Reflective Analysis

I started the assignment with the idea of a child prodigy over casted by the shadows of his
mothers’ expectations similar to Hadley’s idea of the mother not being able to properly
connect with the daughter due to them having different perspectives about incidents at
home. I began the story by depicting a warm summers morning in a upper middle class
home to portray to the readers that the main character isn’t struggling physically and also
provided a physical description to allow the readers to paint a picture in their heads. I then
mentioned Des’s lack of motivation which foreshadows as well as provides a problem which
I can later add onto. I created the intense video game battle in order to build suspense for
when Des’s mother turned off the TV and called it a “normality” to Des to foreshadow his
inability to finish things due to factors outside his control. The making of breakfast mixed
with the arrival of the postman was intended to further exemplify how factors beyond his
control caused him to never complete anything. By this point the audience has realised a
recurring theme and therefore began to sympathise with Des. A metaphor “causing Des’s
blood to boil” was used to help the audience understand the frustration, breakfast has
caused Des. “Stolen creation” was used to describe breakfast after Des’s mother had taken
credit of it, to portray to the audience how Des had felt that his credit had been “stolen”
from him.
