Condensed Notes

The Pythagorean Theorem is a 2+ b2=c 2. This formula only works for right triangles
 If a 2+ b2 <c 2, then the triangle is obtuse.
 If a 2+ b2 >c 2, then the triangle is acute.

In a 30-60-90 Triangle, the opposite of the 30° is the shortest side, the opposite of 60° is √ 3
times more than the shortest side, and the hypotenuse is twice the shortest side.

In a 45-45-90 Triangle, the legs are equal (thus it is an isosceles right triangle) and the
hypotenuse is √ 2 times more than the legs.

There are 3 kinds of sides of a right triangle that are different based on
the angle you are using. The opposite is the side across the angle, the
adjacent is the one making a 90° with the opposite, and the hypotenuse
will always be the largest side of the right triangle and the opposite of
the 90°.

There are 3 main trigonometric ratios that can be defined as SOH-CAH-

opposite
TOA. SOA represents the sine function, which has a ratio of hypotenuse .
adjacent
CAH represents the cosine function, which has a ratio of hypotenuse ,
opposite
and lastly, TOA, which represents the tangent f unction with a ratio of adjacent . There are
also the reciprocals (the reverse of the fraction, if the numerator and denominator switched
places) of the main trig ratios. Sine’s reciprocal is cosecant, cosine’s reciprocal is secant
and tangent’s reciprocal is cotangent. SOHCAHTOA can help find the missing side given
one side and one angle, or find the missing angle given two sides.
