Rediscovered
tickets
Dear editor,
I was interested to read the ‘Tickets
Please’ story. I have just moved to a
new house and, in all the sorting,
I found the ticket book that I received
for my first-ever flight in October
1978. It was a return flight from
Birmingham to Belfast with British
Airways and cost £44.
I have enclosed a photo which
includes a postcard that I purchased
of the plane I flew on.

Atlantic on the very
periphery of Europe,
Iceland is relatively
isolated and has a national
population comparable to a mid-sized
British town. Yet this remote island
nation was at one time home to not
just one but two international airlines.
First on the scene was Flugfélag
Akureyrar (Airline of Akureyrar),
founded in June 1937 in Akureyri, a
small port and fishing town in the
Eyjafjörður fjord in the country’s far
north. Three years later the company
relocated its headquarters to the
capital Reykjavík and changed its
official name to Flugfélag Íslands
(Flight Company of Iceland – not to
be confused with two short-lived
seaplane operators of the same name).
To increase its international appeal, it
was more commonly known under its
trading name Iceland Airways.
The second player arrived on March
10, 1944 in the shape Loftleiðir (also
known as Loftleiðir Icelandic and
Icelandic Airlines), the brainchild

of three young Icelandic pilots Alfreð
Elíasson, Kristinn Olsen and Sigurður
Ólafsson, who were unable to find
paid work after graduating from flight
school. Like its rival, the new arrival
concentrated initially on domestic
operations using a Stinson Reliant
single-engine monoplane TF-AZX.
A testament to the fledgling firm’s
diversity and flexibility, this aircraft
spent the whole summer of 1944
supporting the local fishing industry.

well. The Stinson was damaged

necessitating its return to Reykjavík by

after striking telephone lines.
Loftleiðir’s first aircraft never flew
again but, unfazed, the trio moved to
acquire new equipment. By summer
1945 the firm had taken ownership of
a second Reliant and an amphibious

state flag carriers. However, as
Loftleiðir remained under private
ownership, it opted against joining
the trade body and was thus able
to define its own fares between
Reykjavík and the US.
In order to comply with then-valid
freedoms of the air restrictions, tickets
for transatlantic flights were issued in
two parts (to/from Iceland), meaning

In a bid to muscle in on Loftleiðir’s
market share, SAS Scandinavian
Airlines launched a rival propeller
operation during the winter of 1963/64
using written-down DC-7Cs. This
experiment was largely unsuccessful
and was abandoned at the end of the
season. By then, Loftleiðir had grown
its European network substantially,
offering connecting services to
Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Glasgow,
Gothenburg, Helsinki, London,
Luxembourg, Oslo and Stockholm.
A Canadian touch
The enterprising Reykjavík-based
carrier was constantly looking for a
bargain and in 1964 unveiled plans
to acquire two Canadair CL-44D4-8
