and partner air cargo operators. The same
technologies and information will also

Western Sydney International’s ability to
diversify its revenues as the airport grows.

A matter of pride
Hickey considers the airport a

project, driving regional economic
growth and opportunity, in the same way

were the centrepieces of successful
city-building strategies. “Just as cities
of the past were created around ports,
‘global cities’ of the future will be created
around aviation,” he predicted.
“We are also proud of our workforce,
with more than 50% of the people
building Western Sydney International
living in the local area,” he added.
“We will continue to drive job
opportunities for people close to
where they live and raise their families,
throughout construction and into the

“We’ve met all our milestones and
Western Sydney International is on track
to open to international and domestic

AutoLogic Airports’ iCargo system consists
of a prefabricated semi-permanent modular
building, cargo hardware and software that
can process from 44,000 to 3,306,933 tons

The prefabricated module building takes
just weeks to erect, is not subject to the usual

To better understand the reason why
Eurohub came to being, it’s important
to put the development in the context
of the wider changes taking place at
BHX in the 1980s. Birmingham Airport
opened its new £29m ‘Main Terminal’
in April 1984. Capable of handling three
million passengers per year, the West
Midlands site presented itself as a viable
alternative to London/Heathrow for
airlines and passengers alike.
Situated to the northeast of the main
runway, across from the old Elmdon
terminal, the location had been chosen
not only because of its proximity to the
recently opened National Exhibition
Centre (NEC) and railway station (linking
both Birmingham and London via the
West Coast Main Line), but also because
of its ample room for expansion.
At the time, Birmingham was the
UK’s fifth busiest gateway and one
of the fastest growing in the country.
Passenger traffic in the immediate years
after the terminal’s opening grew much
more quickly than expected, rising by
114% from 1.63 million per year in 1985 to
3.49 million in 1990.
It wasn’t just traveller numbers
growing either. Airline operators also
increased, from eight in 1983 to 20 by
1989. Scheduled destinations served
also blossomed – from 24 in 1983, to
39 by the end of the decade. Arguably
a victim of its own success, a building
that had originally been set to cope
with demand well into the 1990s was
becoming overcrowded and a solution
was desperately needed.

Regional connections
Aviation in the UK was very different
in the 1980s to what it is today.
Point-to-point flights from the British
regions to Europe were almost
non-existent, as were the big-name,
low-cost airlines that would eventually
go on to operate them.

began in March that year and the huge
task was completed on May 13, 2011.
Considerable changes were made to
the internal layout, including a larger and
more streamlined centralised security
area. There were also updates to both
landslide and airside retail units and a

The work also coincided with the

SOVIET-ERA AIRLINERS
HISTORIC COMMERCIAL
AIRCRAFT SERIES: VOLUME 1
When the Soviet Union fell in December 1991,
there were close to 3,500 assorted Soviet-built
airliners that could be deemed operational,
the vast majority of which flew for Aeroflot.
However, today they have almost all disappeared.

This book follows the fortunes of the great

Soviet airliners over the last three decades and
looks at what happened to this immense fleet
of Antonovs, Ilyushins, Tupolevs and Yaks.
