Making additional copies of kit parts, either to replace damage items or (as
here) to provide extra equipment, isn’t as difficult as it sounds. As the styrene
components were to be used for stowage, moulds were made of the various items
by pressing them into a piece of Oyumaru Moulding Compound (available from
craft and online retailers), which was immersed in hot water to make it flexible.
After the master was removed, two-part resin was poured into the mould (with
care taken to work it into the corners) and then set aside to dry. Despite my best

visible on the model.

shows a tantalising scene; this
month’s gem was inspired by
Airfix’s re-released 1/72 Vampire
T.55/J 28 C trainer.
Here we see a line-up of three
Vampire Mk.Is and two Swedish
Air Force J 28 As. After much
research it has been established
it was taken at English Electric’s
Samlesbury facility, probably in
late 1946. The first J 28 has just
Swedish markings, but appears
to have inherited its port aileron
from a natural-metal aircraft,
while the second airframe has
received an F 13 Wing label. All
three British F.1s (TG/341, /386
and /329) were ordered for
the RAF under Contract No.6/
ACFT/4182/C.4(b) on May 13,
1944. They were constructed
by English Electric, although at
least one, TG/386 (which was the
first Vampire to be fitted with a
single-piece Perspex canopy),
served with de Havilland as a
trials aircraft until it was
struck off charge in 1953.

Note: black de-icer boots present on all wing, tailplane, and fin leading edges.
Reportedly taken at RCAF Station Stanley, Nova Scotia in 1944, these photos show one
of the imported B-34s, numbered M-144 during its time as a USAAF trainer, during
which the nose inscriptions were probably applied. The c/n (4542) and mid-fuselage
artwork are most likely factory markings. Note the mid-1943 red-outlined ‘stars
and bars’, turret-well cap typical of the USAAF trainers, and the RAF serial, AJ404,
reapplied with part of the last ‘4’ overlapping the US insignia. The meaning of the ‘No.
21’ marking isn’t known. (VMFA archives via the Aviaeology collection)
