Activity 3: Bionic Bodies

Guiding Question: How has the development of

artificial body parts changed lives?

INSTRUCTIONS:
● You will work in a group of 2 or 3 people to answer
the following worksheet. You will get together and
fairly assign roles to each member of the group.

● In addition to the assigned roles, one person in the group needs to make a copy of this document and
share it with the group. One person needs to be responsible for submitting the document at the end.

● You will present answers 2 and 3 to the class:

Use a slide show
DO NOT use text, other than titles and subtitles.
Use no less than 6 slides, and no more than 15.
All the students must participate in the presentation, each one should explain the boxes they
answered.
Refer to page 80 of your Science Textbook for advice on oral presentations.
● You will not be able to read while presenting.

1. For the case of designing prostheses for Aimee Mullens, what are some of the following:
Name:
Criteria of the design The leg prostheses require the joints to be able to move and allow natural
stride. It also needs to be durable so it won’t easily break while walking,
running, or exercising.

Constraints of the design The constriants of the design are that the leg cannot be too heavy. Not
only does it need to be light, it also has to fit inside the clothing.

Scientific principles involved One of the recent inventions is to power the prosthetic limbs by the
muscles in your own limbs to generate electrical signals and pulses.

Impact of the design on The design of the prosthetic leg is suited for sports and sometimes for
others everyday use. It is also included with a cosmetic pair that look and feel just
like real legs.

Impact of the design on the The prosthetic legs were made of plastic which is not environmentally
natural environment friendly. Everyday, plastic and prosthetic legs are disposed of, which causes
pollution.
2. Revisit the issue: What problems in medicine still need better solutions? Provide an example, and explain
why you think there is a big need in our society to solve it. If you use any sources of information different from
the textbook, you need to include the link.
Name
Example: Acne is one medicine that still needs a better solution. This acne vaccine
will stop the bacteria called propionibacterium which is the main bacteria
to cause acne.

Current approach: We’re trying to cure acne from teenagers and young adults. This
vaccination will cure acne from ages above 13 that suffers acne because it
causes swelling and pain.

Why do you think there’s a Teenagers and young adults feel very insecure about it. Removing acne
need to solve it: from their face or body will give them more confidence and make them
look better.

What would the impact on The whole world would be using this medicine because no one wants
society be: swelling and pain on their body.

3. Consider a biomedical device of your choosing that is not yet invented. Describe the device and who it could
help. Then explain the following:
Name:
Description, use, and who could This device mostly targets people who are overweight or obese, this
it help: device shows how many pounds of food are in your stomach. If people
want to adjust their weight, they can use this device to see how many
pounds of food to eat.

The design criteria for the The design of our device is a smart watch that tracks how many pounds of
device food you have eaten. Not just that but it also has reminders that tell you
when to sleep, wake up, or exercise.

The science relevant to the The design will have a sensor to weigh how many pounds you have in your
design stomach.

The potential positive and The positive impact is that people can manage their body by exercising
negative impacts on people and eating with their preferred body. However, the negative impact is
because people want to get a healthy body image so they usually over
exercise or eat restrictedly which is unhealthy.

Possible limitations of the Because the design of the device is a watch, the weight display won’t be
design as accurate and will be the approximate weight.
