For Grade 9 Onyx and Sardonyx

1. Using the Periodic Table of Elements, compute for the molar mass of each of the
following compound. (Round off the atomic mass of each element to the nearest whole
number). Write your answer and computation on a separate 1 whole sheet of paper.

Example: H2O (dihydrogen oxide or water)

H -- 2 atoms x 1g = 2g

O -- 1 atom x 16 g = + 16 g
Molar Mass = 18 g/mol

a. KCl (potassium chloride)

b. NaCN (sodium cyanide)
c. H2S (hydrogen sulfide)
d. NaN3 (sodium azide)
e. H2CO3 (carbonic acid)

2. Calculate the mass (in grams) in 2.5 mol of each sample.

Example: 2.5 mol H2O

2.5 mol H2O x 18g H2O = 2.5 x 18g H2O = 45g H2O
1 mol H2O
a. KCl
b. NaCN
c. H2S
d. NaN3
e. H2CO3

3. Calculate the number of moles in 500 g sample of each substance.

Example: 500g H2O

500g H2O x 1 mol H2O = 500 mol H2O = 27.78 mol H2O
18g H2O 18
a. KCl
b. NaCN
c. H2S
d. NaN3
e. H2CO3

4. How many molecules or formula units are present in each sample in no. 3?

Example: 27.78 mol H2O

27.78 mol H2O x 6.02 x 1023 molecules = 1.67 x 1025 molecules

1 mol H2O
a. KCl
b. NaCN
c. H2S
d. NaN3
e. H2CO3
