1 Maggie did not believe in magic. She worked hard to make her dreams come true. When she wanted to make the basketball team, she practiced 
for a month. So when her grandpa gave her a lucky coin, Maggie thought it was a joke. 

2 “Your future will be bright,” Grandpa said. “But if you need some luck, hold this coin and make a wish. The coin will do the rest.” 

3 Maggie laughed, “I don’t believe in magic.” 

4 Grandpa winked. “The coin is very powerful. Promise me you will use it responsibly.” 

5 Maggie put the coin in her pocket. She thought, A lucky coin. How ridiculous! 

6 The next day Maggie’s teacher surprised the class with a quiz. Maggie was nervous. She forgot to do the reading assignment. What am I going 
to do? Maggie realized that the coin was in her pocket. This is silly, but what have I got to lose? I wish for a miracle. 

7 Maggie took a deep breath and looked down at the quiz. It was about a story she read last week! It’s a miracle! The coin worked! 

8 The bell rang for lunch. Maggie’s stomach grumbled. I know exactly what to wish for next: pizza. She made her wish. Maggie cheered when she 
saw the menu in the cafeteria. As she bit into her second slice of pizza she thought, I could get used to this. 

9 Maggie wished to be chosen as captain of the basketball team. Then she wished that the team would win all their games. Soon she was leading 
the undefeated team into the championship. 

10 Then one day, Maggie led the team on an outdoor run. The coin bounced out of her pocket somewhere along the trail. It was gone. 
11 On the morning of the championship game, Maggie couldn’t do anything right. She didn’t sink a basket during the first half of the game. Her 
teammates struggled without Maggie’s confidence to guide them. It looked like the team would lose. The referee blew his whistle, announcing a 
time-out. Maggie ignored her coach’s pep talk. I didn’t used to believe in magic. Now I can’t do anything without it. I wish I’d never heard of that 
lucky coin! 

12 “Hey, Maggie! Are you listening?” 

13 Maggie snapped to attention. 

14 Her coach said, “We need some of your usual magic, or we don’t have a chance. Can we count on you?” 

15 A second whistle called the team back. Within seconds, the ball was in Maggie’s hands. She took a deep breath and took a shot.
