Table 1 shows the mRNA codes for the amino acids used in protein
synthesis:
Table 1

a) What is meant by a triplet code? [1]

b) Use Table 1 to translate the mRNA in Figure 4 into the collagen amino acid
sequence. [1]

c) An insertion mutation adds an adenine to the position marked with * on

Figure 4 so the codon becomes GGA.

Use Table 1 to translate the mutated mRNA into an amino acid sequence. [1]

d) Explain the effect that an insertion mutation has on the amino acid
sequence of collagen. [2]

Question A6

Figure 6 shows an experiment set up to measure osmosis.

Figure 6

capillary tube

glucose solution

beaker of distilled water

thistle funnel
partially permeable
membrane

A student set up the apparatus as shown in Figure 6. He added 20 cm3 of a

1% glucose solution to the thistle funnel and sealed it with visking tubing
which is a partially permeable membrane. The thistle funnel was lowered into
a beaker containing distilled water at 25°C and the position of the glucose
solution in the capillary tube was recorded. The apparatus was left set up in
this way, and the student recorded the position of the glucose solution in the
capillary tube every 5 minutes for 30 minutes.

The results are shown in Table 2.

Table 2
Time Distance glucose
(minutes) solution moved (mm)
0 0
5 11
10 30
15 48
20 57
25 63
a) Explain why the student should have repeated the experiment at least
three times. [2]

b) Plot the data in Table 2 in a suitable form. [4]

c) Explain why the level of glucose solution in the capillary tube rises. [3]

d) By drawing a line on your plot:

i. predict the results if the temperature in the beaker had been

increased to 30°C. [1]

ii. Explain why you chose this line. [1]

referred to as a fluid mosaic. [6]

b) Give an account of the arrangement and function of the membrane

system in THREE of the following:

i. mitochondria;
ii. chloroplast;
iii. nucleus;
iv. Golgi apparatus;
v. endoplasmic reticulum. [ 14 ]
