Let’s explore NUMBERS with your child using things around

us.

Counting is an important skill for preschool

children and foundational to later maths
development. In order to develop a strong
understanding of quantity, and eventually how to
manipulate quantities (like adding,
subtracting), children need an
abundance of counting experiences.

Here is a list of activities you can do

with your child to practice counting:

1 Play number song [Link here]. Encourage your child

to sing along and count from number 1 to 10
forward and backward.
Get your child to count things around them.

For example: tables, chairs, rooms, windows,
spoons and cookies.

Materials: A list of numbers
1. Provide your child a number list from 1 to 10.
2. Ask your child to point and read the numbers forward (1
to 10) and backward (10 to 1).
