The Earth has different elevation points. Some areas around the
world have low elevation and other areas have higher elevation.
Elevation is the distance of land above sea level.

and the darkest shade of green
is the lowest level of elevation.
Elevation can be measured in

feet (ft) or miles (mi). It can
also be measured in meters
(m) or kilometers (km).
This elevation map represents the different distances with colors.

The highest point of elevation above sea level is white. White
represents mountains. The lowest distance of land above sea
level is colored green. Maps that show you elevations are also
called topographic maps.

Let’s explore different places around the United States and see
how they are represented on an elevation map.
The lowest elevation in the United States is Death Valley in

California's Badwater Basin. It is 282 feet below sea level.
You can use elevation maps to
