or a globe to learn about continents.
There are many countries, cities, states, and provinces in the

world. You can use a map or a globe to help you find them!

Remember, a globe is made to look like the actual Earth. It is

round with continents, countries, and bodies of water on it. A map
is a flat drawing of the Earth with continents, countries, and
bodies of water. You can use both to locate places around the
world.

Maps and globes are important tools that help you learn about
the world around you. Search online for an image of a globe
and an image of a map. Think about how they show the world
differently.

The drawing of the world on the

globe. All the continents and
bodies of water match up.
However, what happens when
you peel it? The image shape
changes!
A globe is three-
dimensional like the orange. It
is hard to create a perfect two-
dimensional map. Some areas will be stretched when drawn. This
is what cartographers call distortion.
Cartographers use map projection when they make a map. They

place the image of the world onto a flat surface, and draw or
connect places so that you can see all of the details.

Another way to take a globe and make a map is by flattening it!
Draw an outline of the world on an orange. Then, peel the

orange and lay it flat on a table. Does it look the same before

and after you peel it? What looks different?
Note: Don't worry if your outline of the world isn't exact. You'll
still be able to see the changes.
