INTRODUCTION

KW935-C has four voltage input channels, all electrically isolated from ground and
from each other. Inputs may vary up to +/- 30 volts and be either a single + or -
polarity or both. +/- 0.5 volts is the minimum to give full-scale output. The voltages
are turned into digital data.

The KW935-C has a “passthrough" facility.

KW935-C INSTALLATION GUIDE

CONNECTIONS
The terminal blocks lift off and may be refitted vertically or horizontally to the board.
Use miniature screened cable and ideally ground the screens at the source of the
signal. If this is not convenient ground it somewhere, but always ground the screens
to avoid interference.

DATA OUTPUT WARNING

Before connecting the data to a computer, or anything other than a pure NMEA opto
isolated receiver make sure there is not a voltage difference more than 5 volts
between the two. Computers usually ground the data line, which would ground the
KW935's power supply line. If in any doubt use an AC-DC power supply, which can
be fitted in the box.

SIGNAL INPUT
The interface requires DC signals. Carefully locate and measure suitable signals
using an oscilloscope if possible. Heavy AC ripple or interference across the lines will
probably be filtered out by the interface.
AC signals from the line to ground will be normal and will not affect operation,
provided the levels are balanced as they usually are.

A typical signal may be a voltage driving an RPM indicator, +/- 12 volts at 120 RPM
ahead or astern.
Zero volts is expected to be the central zero position of the signal. (If not, don't worry,
the signal can still be handled.) The interface is quite happy with voltages to 60 volts
across the line and 240 volts from line to ground. Take care not to short out the
signals. The loading on the signal by the interface is minimal, 50 K ohms minimum.
However, if the signal source is of very high impedance there could be an effect, and.
a different interface would be required.

AC signals can be interfaced by the KW935 by changing the jumper adjacent to the
Channel input connector.

READING THE DATA

You cannot install the KW935 without doing this. Read the NMEA 0183 output of the
interface using a PC or a data reader.

Hook up the data reader and make sure you are reliably reading the data, which will
be NMEA 0183 at 4800 baud.
Configure the DIL switch SW1 to the required channel selection and observe the
message out. Example $PAMIV,00,000,000,000,000,

CONNECTING AND SETTING UP

PRESETTING THE POTENTIOMETERS

Play safe. Turn all four potentiometers 30 turns anticlockwise, or until they click, to
avoid any possible overload. This is the start point for setting to work. Use a purpose
built trimming tool.

ADJUSTING A CHANNEL INPUT

Connect an input signal for example a rudder angle transmitter, whose characteristics
that have already been measured. Suppose it is +/- 10 volts from hard to starboard
to hard to port.

If this is the first time you are interfacing the KW935 I suggest you try this first in the
workshop using a variable voltage PSU to get totally familiar.
Connect the input to Ch 4 and configure the DIL switch SW1 to option 5.
Set the rudder to hard to starboard e.g. 35 degrees, +10 volts. Adjust R4 clockwise
until the value reaches 035.

Next you can check it is 000 amidships and -035 hard to port. You can expect some
variation with very noisy signals, and you may well find the on-board sensors are not
perfectly aligned or linear.

CHECKING THE NMEA 0183 OUTPUT

Set the switch to 5 the first of the options. The $ERRSA data will show a rudder angle
translated into an angle of +/- 45 degrees. Try intermediate positions, and it will show
any non linearity.

ADJUSTING ALL CHANNELS

Repeat the previous procedures. $ERRPM shows shaft speed and $PAMIT shows
Thruster and Telegraph percentage. Configure the DIL switch SW1 to option 5.

USING A SYNCHRO INTERFACE

The KW910-M rudder angle interface may be required, which would input to the
KW935-C. Option 5 will then require option 6 selected to disable the rudder.

HOW THE PROPULSION INTERFACE WORKS

The input channel is selected in turn by miniature relays. Each input channel remains
isolated from each other. A low pass filter and level translator circuit feed an 8 bit
analogue digital converter. This input circuit is opto isolated from ground. Data is
updated in a 1.6 second cycle. This input circuit is used for its economy and
simplicity. The integrated circuits and relays are all plug-in.
