Describe how you have met the Employability Skills Requirement:

I worked at Indiana Wesleyan University for 2 years.

Describe how you have learned and demonstrated the following Employability Skills.
Mindsets: Last summer I had a landscaping job at Indiana Wesleyan University. At my job there were
many life-long learning experiences. For example I was working on one of the hottest days of the year.
My boss really thought that it was way too hot to be working outside, especially with black mulch and he
had us come inside and help the engineering team with some different things. In this case I had to learn
that anywhere that you will work you have to be flexible.

Work Ethic: When I worked at Indiana Wesleyan University I had to use integrity. For example at my job
my boss would send me and a co-worker together to complete a task that needed to be done. When we
finished the task he would ask us every time did we get it done and does it look good. We had to be
honest and do our job even though our boss was not there watching over us. We had to do the work like
he was there with us.
Time management is a huge part of my job. This was my first job I had ever had so I never really had to
manage my time well but I learned very quickly that I had to manage my time. For example when it
would be really hot out we would go in earlier that morning so we could beat the heat of the sun. So I
would have to wake up earlier and make sure that I had enough time to pack my lunch and drive there
and be on time. I also had to manage my time because I would get off of work at 4:00 and get home at
4:15. Right after work about 4 times a week I would have to be at church at 5:00 to play guitar. I would
get home, take a shower, eat and get ready. That is when I really had to manage my time wisely.
At work I had many perseverance moments. For example there were many days where it was hot
outside. There were days where it was almost 100 degrees outside. I had many moments where I was just
tired, hot and sweaty. I would just want to take a 10 min break. But the job would have to be done within
a reasonable time so I would have to push myself to finish the job within a reasonable time.

Learning Strategies: At my job I had to use effective communication. I would have to communicate to my
boss if I need time off and if I was not coming in that morning or if I had a doctor's appointment. I also
would have to communicate when I needed assistance with the task at hand or if I was done or needed to
fill up our water tank.
At my job I used attention to detail a lot. I would be told to plant some flowers a certain way and it was
my job to make sure the mulch line looked clean cut and the flowers are in the right positions and to
make sure the colors of the flowers matched and looked professional.
At my job I used problem solving all the time. One time when we were planting flowers we had realized
that we had messed up the way they were supposed to be put in so we told our boss and he said that it
was okay and we could create a new plan and a new look for the flower bed.
Social-Emotional Skills: In choir I use collaboration. For example I am a soprano 1 and I have 2 other
people that are with me we have to collaborate on when you are planning on taking a breath during a
song as we know that I need to keep going and then when they come back in again and sing we can take
our breath so we have to stagger our breathing between us. We also collaborate on what person wants to
be on which part and we decide on who we think is best for each part.
