COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this course, students will have an opportunity to create, present, respond and connect to visual arts, focusing
on drawing, design, color, painting and sculpture. This course will introduce students to a variety of techniques
and mediums that they will apply while creating original artwork. A variety of design elements, such as line,
space, form, color, value and texture, as well as a variety of design principles, including balance, unity,
contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm and pattern, will be studied. Students will have an opportunity to
appreciate and interpret works of art in terms of history, aesthetics and culture. Students also will begin
developing a portfolio of original artwork.

Students will utilize 21st century learning and innovation skills. They are the following:
CREATIVITY-the ability to use the imagination to develop original ideas or designs
CRITICAL THINKING-disciplined intellectual criticism that combines research, knowledge of
historical context, and balanced judgment
COMMUNICATION-the exchange of information between people

THERE IS ONE IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT!

A vital part of the course will be the REQUIRED SKETCHBOOK. It will be a collection of ideas and sketches that will
count towards the student’s grade. Sketchbooks can be purchased in store, online OR can be made/created OR free digital
versions are available such as https://sketch.io/sketchpad/
Spiral-bound sketchbooks are best! Paper without lines is preferred for sketching, but paper with lines is acceptable.
Students will have until the end of the FIRST SEMESTER in order to obtain a sketchbook. If students do not have a
sketchbook by the beginning of the second semester, their sketchbook grades will be worth ZERO.
Please see me IMMEDIATELY if there is an issue obtaining a sketchbook.

GRADING PERCENTAGES
*Studio Projects=50%*
The main content of this course involves the production of different studio projects. Each studio project will be
introduced through teacher and student-led discussions, demonstrations and other varied prompts and practices.
Students will work in class or virtually on individual and/or collaborative short-term and long-term studio
projects. Throughout the art production there will be individual and/or group critiques and
assessments. Evaluation of the student’s studio project will be at the end of the creation. Students will be
graded by using a rubric with a 5-1 scale, 5 being highest and 1 being lowest. Assignments are due on the due
date. Missed work will result in a lower grade. Extensions for assignments need to be made with the teacher.
Projects may be worked on in class or virtually and proof of work must be shown.
