 Read the following instructions very carefully and strictly follow them :
 This question paper comprises four Sections – A, B, C and D.
 There are 37 questions in the question paper. All questions are compulsory.
 Section A – Questions no. 1 to 20 are very short answer type questions, carrying
one mark each.
 Section B – Questions no. 21 to 27 are short answer type questions, carrying two
marks each.
 Section C – Questions no. 28 to 34 are long answer type questions, carrying
three marks each.
 Section D – Questions no. 35 to 37 are also long answer type questions, carrying
five marks each..
 There is no overall choice in the question paper. However, an internal choice has
been provided in 2 questions of 1 mark, 2 questions of 2 marks, 1 question of
three marks and all the 3 questions of five marks. You have to attempt only one
of the choices in such questions.
 In addition to this, separate instructions are given with each section and
question, wherever necessary.

Use of calculators and log tables is not permitted.

25cm when transferred in to air from the liquid.

23 A 2 mW laser operates at a wavelength of 500 nm. Calculate the number of 2
photons that will be emitted per second.
24 Derive an expression for capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with partially 2
filled dielectric.

Figure shows charge (q) versus voltage (V) graph for series and parallel
combination of two given capacitors. Find the capacitances of individual
capacitors.

26 On interchanging the resistances, the balance point of a meter bridge shifts to 2


the left by 10 cm. The resistance of their series combination is 1000 Ω. How
much was the resistance on the left slot before interchanging the resistances?

27 Derive an expression for force per unit length between two parallel conductors 2
carrying currents in opposite directions. What is the nature of force between
them?

28 Determine the charge on the capacitor in the following circuit. 3

29 A bi-convex lens is formed with two thin plano - convex lenses as shown in the 3
figure. Refractive index n of the first lens is 1.5 and that of the second lens is
1.2. Both the curved surfaces are of the same radius of curvature R = 14 cm.

30 a. In a photoelectric effect experiment, the threshold wavelength of light is 3


380 nm. If the wavelength of incident light is 260 nm, calculate the
maximum kinetic energy of emitted electrons.
b. Name two properties of photoelectric effect that cannot be explained by
wave theory of light.

31 Define electric dipole moment. With a neat and labeled diagram, derive an 3
expression foe electric field intensity along the axial line of an electric dipole.
32 Four charges q, q, - q & -q are placed respectively at the four corners of a square 3
of side L in order. Calculate the work done to dissociate this system of charges.
OR
Three concentric spheres of radii a, b & c (a<b<c) are charged with uniform
charge densities +σ, -σ & +σ respectively. If the potential of the outer sphere is
same as that of the inner sphere, find a relation between a, b & c.
33 With the help of a neat and labelled diagram, explain how to find the internal 3
resistance of a cell. Derive the necessary formula used.

34 A neutron, a proton, an electron and an alpha particle enter a region of constant 3


magnetic field with equal velocities. The magnetic field is along the inward
normal to the plane of the paper. The tracks of the particles are labelled in
figure. Identify the particles with reason.

SECTION D

35 a. With a neat and labelled ray diagram, derive an expression for the 5
refractive index of the material of the prism. Draw the variation of angle
of deviation with angle o incidence.
b. A parallel beam of light is incident from air at an angle ∝ on the side PQ
of a right-angled triangular prism of refractive index n= 1.414. Light
undergoes total internal reflection in the prism at the face PR when ∝
has a minimum value of 45°. Find the angle θ of the prism.

OR
a. With a neat and labelled diagram, derive an expression for magnifying
power of compound microscope forming the final image at near point.
b. The focal lengths of the objective and the eyepiece of a compound
microscope are 2.0 cm and 3.0 cm respectively. The distance between the
objective and the eyepiece is 15.0 cm. The final image formed by the
eyepiece is at infinity. Assuming the two lenses to be thin, find the
magnifying power of the microscope.
36 a. Using Gauss’s theorem derive an expression for electric field intensity due 5
to long uniformly charged infinite wire. Draw a graph to show variation of
electric field intensity with perpendicular distance from the wire.
b. Draw equipotential surfaces of (i) uniform electric field & (ii) electric
dipole.
OR
a. Derive an expression for electric potential due to a short electric dipole at
any point around the dipole.
b. Electric field in the figure is represented along x direction and is given by
Ex = A𝑥 + B, where E is in N/C and 𝑥 in meters. Given that A =15NC-1m-1
and B = 10N/C. Calculate the (i) electric flux through the cube and (ii) net
charge enclosed in the cube.

37 a. Using Biot – Savart’s law arrive at an expression for magnetic field at any 5
axial point away from the center of a circular coil carrying current. Draw
a graph to show the variation of magnetic field with distance from the
center.
b. A current loop, having two circular arcs joined by two radial lines as
shown in the figure. It carries a current of 10 A. Calculate the magnetic
field at point O.

OR
a. Derive an expression for torque experienced by a rectangular coil carrying
current when the area vector is inclined at an angle to the direction of
magnetic field.
b. A rectangular loop L = 10cm & b = 2cm) carrying a current i = 5A is
situated at distance of 2cm from a long straight wire such that the wire is
parallel to one of the sides of the loop and is in the plane of the loop. If
steady current I = 10A is established in the wire as shown in the figure,
calculate the net force experienced by the loop in magnitude & direction.
