Section A

Q.1) Read the following passage and answer the questions (1*4=4)

Whenever an electric current is passed through a conductor, it becomes hot after some time. The
phenomenon of the production of heat in a resistor by the flow of an electric current through it is called
heating effect of current or Joule heating. Thus, the electrical energy supplied by the source of emf is
converted into heat. In purely resistive circuit, the energy expended by the source entirely appears as
heat. But if the circuit has an active element like a motor, then a part of energy supplied by the source
goes to do useful work and the rest appears as heat. Joule’s law of heating forms the basis of various
electrical appliances such as electric bulb, electric furnace, electric press etc.

(a) If the coil of a heater is cut to half, what would happen to heat produced?

(b) 25 W and 100 W bulbs are joined in series and connected to the mains. Which bulb will
glow brighter?

(c) A rigid container has cell with thermally insulated wall contains a coil of resistance 100 Ω,
carrying 1 A. What will be Change in its internal energy after 5 min.

(d) What will be the heat emitted by a bulb of 100 W in 1 min.

Q.2) Two charges of magnitudes -2Q and + Q are located at points (a,0) and (4a,0) respectively.
What is the electric flux due to these charges through a sphere of radius ’3a’ with its
center at the origin? [1]

Q.3) A beam of α particles projected along + x -axis, experiences a force due to a magnetic field
along the + y - axis. What is the direction of the magnetic field? [1]

Q.4) A cyclotron is not suitable to accelerate an electron. Why?

OR
A proton and an electron travelling along parallel paths enter a region of uniform
magnetic field, acting perpendicular to their paths. Which of them will move in a
circular path with higher frequency? Justify your answer. [1]

Q.5) A hollow metal sphere of radius 5 cm is charged such that the potential on its surface is
10 V. What is the potential at the center of the sphere?
OR
A point charge Q is placed at point O as shown in the figure. Is the potential difference
VA − VB positive, negative or zero, if Q is (i) positive (ii) negative? [1]

Q.6) Two wires of equal length, one of copper and the other of manganin have the same resistance.
Which wire is thicker? Justify your answer. [1]

Q.7) Draw equipotential surfaces for an electric dipole. [1]

Q.8) The given graphs shows the variation of charge Q versus Potential difference V for two
capacitors C1 and C2. Both the capacitors have same separation but the plate area of C2 is
double of C1. Which graph line represents C1. Justify your answer. [1]

Section B

Q.9) Plot a graph showing the variation of coulomb force (F) versus 1/ r 2, where r is the distance
between the two charges of each pair of changes: (1μC,2μC) and (2μC, −3μC). What
interpretation from the graphs can be find. [2]

Q.10) Three point charges Q, -4Q and 2Q are place at the vertices of an equilateral triangle ABC of
side ‘l’ as shown in the figure. Obtain the expression for the magnitude of the resultant electric
force acting on the charge Q. [2]

Q.11) A charge q of mass m is moving with a velocity v, at right angles to the uniform magnetic
field B. Deduce the expression for the radius of the circular path it describes.

Q.12) A battery of 5 V and negligible internal resistance is connected across the diagonally opposite
corners of a cubical network consisting of 12 resistors each of resistance 0.5Ω.Determine the
equivalent resistance of the network .
OR
Two resistances are in the ratio of 1:4. If these are connected in parallel their total resistance
becomes 20 ohms. Find the value of each resistance. [2]

Q.13) In the experimental set up of metre bridge shown in the figure, the null point is obtained at a distance of 40

cm from A. If a 10Ω resistor is connected in series with R1, the null point shifts by 10 cm. what value of resistance

should be connected in parallel with (R1+10) Ω such that the null point shifts back to its initial position is?
