General Instructions:
(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C,
Section D and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four Assertion
Reasoning based of 1 mark each, Section B contains five questions of two
marks each, Section C contains seven questions of three marks each, Section D
contains two case study based questions of four marks each and Section E
contains three long answer questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided
in one question in Section B, one question in Section C, one question in each
CBQ in Section D and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt only
one of the choices in such questions.

How would your answer change if the path of the test charge between
the same points is not along the x - axis but along any other random
path?

If the above point charges are now placed in the same positions in a
uniform external electric field⃗
E , what would be the potential energy of
the charge system in its orientation of unstable equilibrium? Justify
your answer in each case.

The area of parallel plates of an air - filled capacitor is 0.20 m❑2 and the
distance between them is 0.01 m. The p.d. across the plates is 3000 V. When a
0.01 m thick dielectric sheet is placed between the plates, the p.d. decreases to
1000 V. Determine:

the capacitance of the capacitor before placing the sheet

charge on each plate

the dielectric constant of the material

the capacitance of the capacitor after placing the dielectric

the permittivity of the dielectric. Givenε 0 = 8.85 × 10 ❑−12 Fm ❑−1 .

32 1. Show how Biot - Savart’s law can be alternatively expressed in the form [5]
of Ampere’s circuital law. Use this law to obtain the expression for the
magnetic field inside a solenoid of length l, cross - sectional area
Ahaving ’n’closely wound turns and carrying a steady current ’l’. Draw
the magnetic field lines of a finite solenoid carrying current I.

A straight horizontal conducting rod of length 0.45 m and mass 60 g is


suspended by two vertical wires at its ends. A current of 5.0 A is set up in the
rod through the wires.Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field
which should be set up in order that the tension in the wire is zero.

1. A straight thick long wire of uniform cross - section of radius a is


carrying a steady current I. Use Ampere’s circuital law to obtain a
relation showing the variation of the magnetic field (B❑r ) inside and
outside the wire with distance r, (r ≤ a) and (r a) of the field point from
the centre of its cross - section. Plot a graph showing the variation of
field B with distance r.

33 A small town with a demand of 800 kW of electric power at 220 V is situated [5]
15 km away from an electric plant generating power at 440 V. The resistance of
the two wirelines carrying power is 0.5Ω per km. The town gets power from
the line through a 4000 - 220 V step - down transformer at a sub - station in
the town.

1. Estimate the line power loss in the form of heat.

2. How much power must the plant supply, assuming there is negligible
power loss due to leakage?

OR

An AC source of voltage V = V 0 sin ω t is connected to a series combination
of L, C and R. Use the phasor diagram to obtain expressions for the
impedance of the circuit and phase angle between voltage and current. Find
the condition when current will be in phase with the voltage. What is the
circuit in the condition called?
