Communication Models

Communication, especially in the business world, can be defined as the interaction


between employers and employees, employees and clients, stockholders and
investor staff, managers and vendors. Irrespective of whether this communication
happens face-to-face, over the phone or via email, it can be broken down into three
basic elements.

The Communication Model is one way of splitting basic communication into three
more advanced stages:

1) Linear Communication

2) Transactional Communication

3) Interactional Communication

Strategic Communication

To have an effective communication strategy requires that the following


factors should be taken into account concurrently:
• Goals and objectives
• Operational constraints and imperatives - things that the organisation
should and should not do
• Pertinent conditions in the environment

Communication Channels

In an organisation, information flows forward, backwards and sideways.


This information flow is referred to as communication. Communication
channels refer to the way this information flows within the organisation and
with other organisations.

In any organisation, three types of communication channels exist:


• Formal
• Informal
• Unofficial
