Name: _______________________________ Grade: ________

Year: ___________ Date Performed: _____________________

Intended Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the reasons for making the patient’s bed
2. Discuss the basic methods of making a bed
3. Identify safety and comfort measures underlying bedmaking procedures
4. Describe steps for making a bed

Definition:

Occupied bed- is made when the client is not able or not permitted to get out of bed.
Either the nature of their illness may contraindicate their sitting out of bed, or they may
be restricted in bed by the presence of traction or other therapies.

The most important part of making an occupied bed is to get the sheets smooth and
tight under the client so that there will be no wrinkles to rub against the client’s skin. If
you divide the bed into two parts –the side the patient is lying on and the side you are
making, so the weight of the patient is never on the side where you are working. Always
keep the side rail up on the patient’s side.

Purposes:
1. To conserve the client’s energy
2. To promote client comfort

Assessment:
 Note specific precautions for moving and positioning the client
 Determine presence of incontinence or excessive drainage from other sources
indicating the need for protective waterproof pads

Planning:
