SECTION 1
Questions 1 to 10

BUILDING CHARACTER
People change
Were you nervous when you were younger, but now you’re more confident? or perhaps dishonesty
used to be your weakness, but now you’re a more honest person. This is because your character
and identity develop as you go through life. The experiences you have, the decisions you make,
and the problems you overcome all shape your character. For instance, when faced with taking an
important exam you might be told “Don’t worry, this kind of experience builds character. “When
you first hear the statement, you may not understand or appreciate its full meaning.
Don’t worry!
What the statement means it that by coping with the stress, you will learn something new and
valuable. For example, even if you don’t pass an exam this time, you’ll know how it feels to take
the exam and you’ll have more chance of succeeding next time and meeting your objective. Also,
even when something bad happens to you, something that feels painful or frustrating, such as
fighting with your friends, you’ll learn how bad it feels, and you’ll also learn how to avoid this
kind of problem in the future.
Be positive
So, the next time you lose a game, or fight with friends, or have a big exam, remember that there is
always something positive that you can learn. That’s building character!

SECTION 2
Questions 11 to 18

MY FIRST POST!
Hi everyone. I am an international student studying at an American university, and I’ve decided to
keep a blog about what I am experiencing in the States. I hope it will help people who want to
study here in the future.

The university
Let me tell you about the university where I’m studying. My university is sometimes described as a
city, meaning that it has a large population, most of whom are either university students or faculty
members. The number of students is approximately 45,000-and that’s only counting full-timers!

The campus
As you can imagine, the campus is massive. To meet the demand of so many students, the
university campus has many resources. The main library is open 24 hours a day, and there are other
smaller libraries, which have more specialized books for various subjects. There’s also a writing
center, a math guidance room, science labs, computer labs-you name it, the campus has it.
Other facilities

Aside from academic facilities, the campus also has student dorms, fitness gyms (yes, many of
those), swimming pools, an ice rink, a stadium, an auditorium, a concert hall, a botanical garden,
cafes, an international center-even a bowling alley! I told you this place was huge.
OK, that’s enough about the university for now. Next time, I update, I’ll primarily talk about my
life here. See you then!

Read the passage and decide if the following sentences are True (T) or False (F). If it is false,
please correct it.

SECTION 3
Questions 19 to 33
A MICROSCOPE IN THE KITCHEN

I grew up with buckets, shovels, and nets waiting by the back door (19); hip-waders hanging in the
closet; tide table charts covering the refrigerator door; and a was sitting (20) microscope on the
kitchen table. Having studied, my mother is (21) a marine biologist. Our household might have
been described as uncooperative (22). Our meals weren’t always served in the expected order of
breakfast, lunch, and supper. Everything was subservient to the disposal of (23) the tides. When
the tide was low, Mom could be found down on the mudflats. When the tide was high, she would be
standing on the inlet bridge with her plankton net.

I have great respect for my mother (24). I learned early that the moon affected the tides. Mom was
always waiting for a full or new moon, when low tide would be lower than average and high tide
higher than average. The moon being (25) aligned with Earth and the sun when full or new, so its
(26) gravity combines with the sun’s gravity to create an even stronger gravitational pull. I knew
that it took about eight hours for the tides to change from high to low, sixteen hours for a
complete cycle of tides (27). I didn’t have to wait to learn these things in school. In our house they
were everyday knowledge.

[1] Often, my brother and I (28), joined our mother on her adventures into tidal lands. [2] At the
very low tides of the full moon, when almost all the water was sucked away, we (29) found the
hideaways where crabs, snails, starfish, and sea urchins hid in order not to be seen. (30) [3]
Sometimes we would dig with shovels in the mud, where yellow and white worms lived in their
leathery tunnels. 13 (31)

For plankton tows, we would stand on the bridge while Mom lowered a cone-shaped net that is often
used by marine biologists (32). Then we would patiently wait. After a while, she would pull up the
net, and we would go home. Later, we would see her sitting at the kitchen table, peering at a drop
of water (33) through the lenses of her microscope from the bottle—watching the thousands of tiny
swimming organisms.

For each phrase or clause in bold in the bracket in the passage, choose the alternative you consider
