The health and safety professional that I interviewed was from a company called
Infracon. They specializes in civil construction and machine operation. Although they don’t do
any forestry operations it is the most similar company in our area. They are contracted to work
on the Trans Mountain Pipeline and other large companies that deal with construction. Right
now, they are working on the excavation of the pipeline trench and other previous work they
have completed are all similar in nature.
The different groups of workers they have are mechanics, supervisors, office staff, machine
operators, and general laborers. The top hazards that workers face is driving, human traffic
interface, traffic control, spotting, access and egress of equipment, equipment maintenance,
and equipment operation. Top injuries are hand, pinch points, being struck by machinery or a
vehicle, slips and falls, property damage, and weather. The strategies that the health and
safety professional gave me were the act of filling out job hazard analysis, hazard assessment,
safe operating procedures, safe work procedures, tool box talks that are specific to the tasks for
the day, verification that the crews are filling out the hazard assessments properly and giving
advice on them if they can be improved, supply PPE for the workers, looking a key performance
indicators, it's mostly administrative for this company.
