Rounding to whole numbers to estimate

Estimating an answer before working it out helps you to
check whether your answer is sensible.

To estimate 6.82 – 2.64, first round both numbers to the

nearest whole number.

6.82 rounds to 7.   2.64 rounds to 3.

So their di"erence will be about 7 – 3 = 4
