Progress Test, Unit 4

I’m Dan and I’m 13 years old. I’m British, but I don’t live in one of the big cities in the UK like London or
Manchester. I live on an island near the south-west coast of the UK. Its name is St Agnes and it’s very, very
small. It’s got a population of about 70 people! But there are more people on St Agnes in summer. That’s
because lots of tourists visit our island in summer.

People come to St Agnes to relax and see its beautiful landscape. There aren’t any hotels on the island but
there’s a fantastic campsite next to a beach. There aren’t any cinemas or museums on the island and there
isn’t a shopping centre. But there are two small shops, and there’s also a really good restaurant and two
cafés. There’s a tennis court too!

St Agnes has got a primary school. But there’s only one class because there are about nine students in the
school! I go to a secondary school on St Mary’s. That’s a different island. There are about 250 students in my
school. I live at the school during the week, and I go to St Agnes for the weekend. It’s fun!

Henry Ford was born in the USA on 30th July 1863. He finished school when he was 15. After doing different
jobs, Ford worked as an engineer for Thomas Edison in 1891. He stopped working for Edison in 1899, but
during that time Ford designed and produced a car. He called it the Quadricyle.

Henry Ford designed a lot more cars and he opened the Ford Motor Company in 1903. In 1908, the company
introduced a car called the Ford Model T. The Ford Motor Company produced 15 million Model T cars. There
was only one colour for the cars – black!

Henry Ford wasn’t the inventor of the car, but he was the inventor of mass production. His company
produced one hundred cars a day! Ford Model Ts weren’t expensive so they were very popular. They weren’t
just for rich people.

Presenter Hello and welcome again to ‘Chit Chat’. On today’s programme we’re talking about bad days.
Dan, Holly and Will all had bad days last week and they’re going to tell us about the things that
went wrong for them. First, Dan.
Dan I had a really bad day on Monday. My mobile phone usually wakes me up. But I didn’t hear it last
Monday so I woke up late and I didn’t have time for breakfast. I ran out of the house and cycled
to school. Then it started raining and I got really wet and cold. When I got to school, I got off my
bike and locked it. But I was 15 minutes late for my first lesson and I got into serious trouble with
my teacher. At the end of the day, I couldn’t find my bike key so I couldn’t ride home. And I didn’t
have any money for the bus.
Presenter So did you walk home?
Dan Yes, and it rained again and I got wet.
Presenter Bad luck! That sounds like a bad day. How did you get your bike? Did you find the key?
Dan No. My bike’s still at school and I still can’t find the key.

Presenter What went wrong for you last week, Holly?
Holly Lots of things. I had a terrible week.
Presenter Really? What happened?
Holly I was sick for three days. I had a cold and a temperature and a terrible headache. I couldn’t go
to school. That was Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then on Thursday I went to school and
there was a science test. I couldn’t answer any of the questions, so I got a really bad mark.
Finally, on Friday, I left my mobile on the bus. I phoned the bus company three times and I went
to the bus station, but they didn’t have it. My mum was really angry. It was new. She gave it to
me for my last birthday.
Presenter You really did have problems last week!
Holly Yes. I’m not going to lose anything ever again!
Presenter Will, tell everyone what happened to you last week.
Will I fell over in a football match and broke my finger. Look.
Presenter Ouch! It looks really painful. Did you go to hospital?
Will Yes. I had an x-ray. The main problem is that I can’t play football for ten weeks. So I’m going to
miss the football team’s trip to France.
Presenter OK, that’s all for now. After the break we’re going to hear about some more bad days. Phone us
with your stories on 07796444

I’ve got it. It was called Sandbanks.

Key Competences Diagnostic Test

Interviewer Hello, and welcome to this week’s episode of Students in Science, with our special guest, Emily
Walker. Hello, Emily. What are you going to tell us about today?
Emily Hello. Well, I’m going to tell you about an elephant care-centre in Thailand. They’re looking for
volunteers to work in the centre. Volunteers pay to work in the centre for between one and three
weeks. And this money pays for the cost of looking after the animals.
Interviewer That sounds amazing! What do volunteers do at the centre?
Emily They help look after the elephants. Every morning they walk to the forest, collect the elephants
and walk back to the centre with them. At the centre, they feed them, and help wash them in the
river. Then they clean the elephants’ shelters and in the afternoon they take them back to the
forest.
Interviewer What do the elephants eat?
Emily Fruit … and lots of it! The volunteers go to local farms and collect pineapples and bananas for
the elephants twice a week.
Interviewer And where is the elephant care-centre?
Emily It’s in Tha Yang, in south Thailand. It’s about 100 miles from Bangkok and about 15 miles from
the beach. It’s a very beautiful place.
Interviewer Well, thanks for telling us about the centre Emily. It sounds like a wonderful place.
