Introduction

A. Background of the Study

Waste segregation and management is a huge problem in San Rafael National High

School, as the generation of waste has/had significant negative impacts on the

environment and the school community. The improper disposal of waste has led to the

accumulation of garbage in and around the school premises, creating unsightly and

unsanitary conditions.

Waste management is crucial for reducing the negative impacts of waste on the

environment, and San Rafael National High School can implement several strategies to

achieve this goal. The first step is to promote waste segregation, where different types of

waste are separated into specific categories such as paper, plastic, and food waste. This

allows for more efficient recycling and disposal methods, as each type of waste can be

managed separately.

Recycling and upcycling of waste paper into fuel briquettes is an effective waste

management strategy that can help reduce the negative impacts of waste on the

environment. Paper briquettes are compressed blocks of paper that can be used as a

source of fuel in place of traditional wood or charcoal. Recycled paper has been

identified as a sustainable and environmentally friendly resource for paper briquette

production, as it diverts waste from landfills and reduces the need for wood.
Paper waste is a serious environmental problem that increases landfill area use, pollutes

air, water, and soil, and deforestation. As stated to the research conducted by Anne

Eisjden et al. (2020), indicates that 14% of deforestation is carried out to meet the need

for paper products, and paper waste makes up a sizeable component of municipal solid

waste in many nations. Paper trash takes approximately 25.57% of all garbage produced

in the Philippines, underscoring the need for environmentally friendly methods of utilizing

and disposing of paper.

At San Rafael National High School, an efficient method to reduce paper waste is

required to handle this issue. This study aims to determine the school's present paper

waste management situation and evaluate the possible advantages of implementing a

long-term waste reduction strategy. In particular, the study will determine the quantity

and types of paper waste produced, assess the recycling program in place, and

recommend methods for lessening paper waste at the institution.

By promoting responsible resource use and environmental sustainability, this study

hopes to raise awareness among students and staff members about the impact of paper

waste on the environment and encourage the adoption of sustainable practices in the

school community. Ultimately, reducing paper waste can lead to cost savings, improved

environmental performance, and a better quality of life for future generations.

This research aims to reduce the waste produced by the students by taking the paper

and use it as an alternative source of fuel, instead of using LPG gas and electric stove to
cook, The researchers will test the suitability of the paper that will be upcycle to produce

a paper briquettes.

In this research, various types of recycled paper such as newspaper, wood-pulp paper,

cardboard, carton, and scrap paper will be examined to identify their suitability for paper

briquette production. The paper samples will be tested to measure the physical and

chemical properties before paper briquette production. As part of the investigation, the

researcher will identify the properties and characteristics of recycled paper that enable it

to be used for paper briquette production. Additional tests will also be conducted to

gauge the suitability of the paper briquettes for burning.

B. Statement of the Problem

GENERAL:

a. The indiscriminate disposal of wastepaper has become a major environmental

issue in many schools and communities. This problem not only contributes to the

accumulation of solid waste but also leads to the loss of valuable resources that can be
recycled or upcycled into useful products. As such, finding sustainable and eco-friendly

solutions to manage wastepaper is crucial in mitigating the negative impacts of solid

waste disposal.

SPECIFIC:

a. What is the current wastepaper management practices of San Rafael National

High School – Senior High School (SRNHS-SHS)

b. How much and what types of waste paper does SRNHS-SHS generates on a

daily, weekly, and monthly basis?

c. What is the potential (in terms of quantity and quality) for fuel briquettes

production of the waste paper generated from SRNHS-SHS?

C. Objectives

a. To identify the different types of waste paper generated in San Rafael National

High School that could be suitable for fuel briquette production.

b. To determine the physical properties of the identified waste paper types.

c. To investigate the effect of different binder materials on the quality of the fuel

briquettes produced from the waste paper.

D. Scope and Delimitation

The scope of this project is focused on assessing the fuel briquette production from

different types of paper. The study will primarily investigate the quality of recycled paper

that is suitable for paper briquette production. The research will be conducted within a

specific time frame and with limited resources, meaning that only the physical properties

of recycled paper relevant to paper briquette production will be explored. Furthermore,

the study will consider factors that may affect the quality of recycled paper, such as the

type and source of paper, the method of recycling, and the additives used in the

recycling process.

However, it is important to note that certain limitations or delimitation will also be in

place. Firstly, the production of paper briquettes will not be included in the study.

Instead, the research will solely focus on the suitability of recycled paper for the

production of paper briquettes. Additionally, the economic viability of using recycled

paper for paper briquette production will not be covered. Secondly, the environmental

impact of paper briquettes will not be tested, nor will the study investigate the chemical

composition of different types of papers. Lastly, potential health hazards associated with

burning paper briquettes will not be explored. Overall, the scope and delimitation of this
project will ensure that the research is focused, feasible, and relevant to the specific

topic being investigated.

D. Significance of the Study

The result of the study will give advantage to the following:

Schools - School administrators, Students and Teachers can benefit from the study by

learning about the process of making paper briquettes and implementing it in school as a

way to reduce paper waste and save on heating costs.

People - The study can provide people with an alternative source of fuel that is

inexpensive and environmentally friendly. It can help households and small businesses

to reduce their dependence on traditional fuel sources and save on energy costs.

Economy - The study can have a positive impact on the economy by creating a new

market for paper waste. Paper briquettes can be sold as an alternative fuel source,

which can generate income for businesses and individuals.

Environment - The study can help to reduce the carbon footprint of individuals and

businesses by providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fuel sources. It can also

help to reduce the amount of paper waste that ends up in landfills, which can have a

positive impact on the environment.
