DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

In this section of the study, it discusses the difficulties encountered by the student’s

decision in choosing a strand in SHS, the modules and features of the proposed system and the

level of satisfaction, efficiency, and effectivity acceptability.

Difficulties encountered by the incoming SHS students in choosing strands

In this study, proponents aimed to understand the difficulties encountered by the

incoming SHS students in choosing strands selection. There are three factors that proponents

identified, including self, family/friends, and financial. The process of choosing an academic

strand can be challenging for incoming SHS students, as it involves considering various factors

and making important decisions that may impact their future academic and career paths.

Self. Based on the survey questionnaires that the proponents gathered, it shows that

incoming SHS students at PU are facing difficulties when it comes in choosing academic strands.

Specifically, the survey results show that in the first factor, which is “Self”, many of the students

finds it challenging to choose a strand. However, out of the five questions in the Self factor, it is

identified that they have one or more preferred strands, with a weighted mean of 3.08, indicating

a strongly agree in their choices.

Family/Friends. The result shows that the students are experiencing difficulties being

separated from their friends if they choose a different strand, with the highest weighted mean

score of 3.12 out of the five questions, indicating a strongly agree in their choices. This indicates

that students may be struggling to make independent choices regarding their SHS strand.

Financially. This factor is very essential for SHS students at PU when it comes to

choosing their academic strand. The study found that many students are facing financial
15

challenges in selecting a strand, as the strand that they chose needs to provide materials which

cost a lot of money. The weighted mean of 2.75 result that this factor indicates agree in their

choices that influence on the students' decision-making process.

The survey conducted at PU shows that the incoming SHS students face difficulties in

choosing their academic strands, and the Family/Friends factor has a significant influence on

their decisions. To address this, providing guidance, resources, and a supportive environment

that encourages open communication between parents and children can help students make

informed decisions based on their skills and interests.

Modules and Features of the Proposed System

The following modules and features were integrated into the suggested system based on

the previous objective.

Sign up Page. This module serves as the initial step for students to access the system by

requiring them to register their university email. This page will prompt students to input their

email address and other pertinent details, such as their name and password, to create an account

and gain access to the system's features.

Log in Page. This module, login page is where students will enter their registered email

and password to gain access to the main/home page.

18

Home Page. This module is the first page users will see when they access the system. It

serves as a landing page that provides an overview of the system's features and gives users a

sneak peek of what's inside. In addition, this module includes a login and sign-up button for

students who want to explore the system.

Dashboard Tab. After logging in, the dashboard page will present assessment results for

a specific strand using charts and graphs, providing users with an efficient way to evaluate

student performance and determine areas that require further attention.

Level of Satisfaction, Efficiency and Effectivity Acceptability

21

To test the level of satisfaction, efficiency and effectivity acceptability of “STRANDby:

A Recommender System for Incoming Senior High School Students”, the proponents designed a

questionnaire which was used to evaluate the developed system.

Satisfaction Acceptability

The proponents provided an evaluation form to incoming SHS students who are having

difficulty in choosing the right strand for them, in order to test their level of satisfaction

acceptability. Based on the results, the satisfaction acceptability was found to be “Acceptable”,

with an average weighted mean of 3.05.
